The Clear War: Year 1000 - 1001
Cliffnotes Version: A group of five Clears realized that they could potentially take over the world. They enslaved the Mind leader, rampaged with him a while, then lost him in the first real battle against the elementals. Then they made an alliance with the Ice leader, ensnared the Storm leader and the Water leader, captured a lot of elementals and then took over all of Ronduin where the combined might of the Winds, Storms, Earths, Fires, and Minds stopped them cold, crushed them, and saved the day. As retaliation, the Clear homeland of Lacuna was literally burned to the ground and covered in lava.
What Was Different Then:
The Full Story: Starting the year 1000, five Clears from Lacuna, the original city of Clears, got it in their head that if they worked in concert, they would be able to dominate the entire world. They just needed a strong 'starting piece'. As luck would have it, Master Thelon Redway, leader of the Minds, was traveling overland in his haste to reach his destination. Having spent his mental energy for the day, he was unable to teleport (or do much of anything with his sign) but insisted on pressing on foot. As the Master rarely traveled abroad in this fashion, he had no escort or guard, and so was unfortunate to bump into the Clears in this state. They overpowered him and made him their personal slave. The Minds of Naruta quickly noted their leader's absence and began the manhunt for him. Meanwhile, the group of Clears began to travel abroad and used their captive three-signer as a means of subduing other elementals, which they quickly brought under their power. At first a small, motley band of slaves, the Clears only gained in power as they rampaged unchecked through the countryside, being careful never to directly attack anything larger than households and farmsteads, but their numbers steadily grow. The Minds, catching wind of their Leader being captive, head to Ilyamen en masse in hopes of gathering more people to assist them in retaliation and gaining Thelon back. A band of adventurers informs them that the ragtag army of the Clears, led by one called Chase Lorent, were last spotted in Ronduin. By this point, the Clears felt confident enough to engage the Minds in a formal battle. They flee Ronduin, but not before leaving obvious hints that they would be in Naurorod next, in the vicinity of Athrug. The Minds, and what help they could garner, give pursuit.
Once in Athrug, the two armies clash. Both are small, but the Clears have the advantage of ordering their soldiers to attack ruthlessly and without care for their lives. During the melee, though, sneakier members of the Mind Army manage to trick Thelon into slipping away from his masters. With their pet three-signer stolen from under their noses, the Clears order for a push through the ranks of the Mind Army and to flee back eastward. The result is bloody; while the Clears lost over half of their numbers in the battle, the Minds found themselves nearly decimated and their elemental allies were cut down. Few escaped the clash alive.
Thelon made a hasty return back to his people once the effects of being enslaved by Clear aura had worn off. There, he ordered all Minds to return to their home communities (Sensatia not having been founded yet) where Thelon hopes to keep his people safely ensconced. The Minds, never great in population, took a hard blow as a race at the loss of life in the battle to Athrug.
The remains of the Clear Army managed to trek hastily across the continent and into Khelek Crystalands where Chase met with the then-leader of the Ices, Jokull Kaspar. The Clears make a tempting offer to the man; they ask for more elementals to replace the losses taken at Athrug, soldiers who would be allowed to retain their free will as long as they behaved and followed orders. Also, they asked that Jokull form an alliance with one of the other national leaders and "they would do the rest". In return, they would be given total solidarity in the new world order. The Clears would not molest Khelek or her people and they would do their best to ensure nobody else did as well. Finally, Chase promised Jokull a substantial amount of spoils from the war that the Clears planned to wage once they had at least two new Leader 'pets'. The reclusive Jokull grew mighty tempted by the offer, for the cost was low to him and his people and agreed.
Once rested and their supplies replenished by their new Ice leader, Chase led his army towards Talen'sul (not yet formed into Kingdom Caelium), hearing rumors that the Leader of Talen'sul, Lady Lya Cumulus of the Winds, was absent from her land, gone to Maelstrom to discuss peace terms. The full weight of Chase's army, in addition to the Ice soldiers that Jokull lent, came bearing down on the village Zephyr Heights. There, they manage to obliterate the meager defenses of the village and enslave every Wind man, woman, and child there. Their numbers almost doubled, Chase split the army in half - half to hold Zephyr and half to make an assault on Talen'sul's capitol. The great walls of Talen'sul held strong but were eventually breached. Just in time, Lya returned with Lord Shadow Brightmore of the Storms, and a number of Storm soldiers to help drive the Clear Army back to Zephyr.
While the Clears plotted how to get at Talen'sul's capitol, treachery was afoot amongst the Elementals. A Storm Lord working under Shadow decided to betray him, leading the Leader out to a place of ambush where Chase and his fellow Clears managed to enslave the man. In possession of another three-signer, they also received word that Jokull had managed to lure Mother Cascata Knowles of the Waters into Khelek where he held her prisoner. Delighted, Chase ordered his army to drain Zephyr of all resources and all people, and simply razed the town as they marched back to Khelek. Chase and his fellow Clears took Cascata into their fold, enslaving her as well, and giving them a mighty arsenal. In exchange for Jokull's cooperation, the Clears offered him a bounty of slave labor in the form of the Wind children taken from Zephyr and a large share of the goods plundered. Pleased with their work, and now having the leisure of time, Chase led his army back to the point of origin for the entire war and his homeland - Fara, a slaver village of Lacuna and the heart of all elemental slave trading. The Elemental leaders scrambled to get into correspondence with one another and try and plan what to do about the situation.
Afterwards, Chase swapped out his tired, worn out slaves with fresh ones from Fara and gathered Shadow and Cascata, as well as the Ice soldiers on loan, and began marching to Ronduin; just in time as Thelon and the Earth leader Avani showed up with the Earth army to completely crush and destroy Fara. Those that survived the attack pulled back into Lacuna and the Earths and Minds continued traveling to Talen'sul - the acting headquarters of the war effort.
During this, Chase took his now-powerful army and made a full assault on Ronduin. Ronduin was not well prepared for a war, the peaceful people having very little in the way of army and militia. As a result, and with Cascata and Shadow at their command, Chase was able to completely capture Ronduin. He and his Clear comrades set about assimilating the entire island-nation under their power and aura.
In Lacuna, Sir Kyros decided to try and retaliate for the loss of Fara. He ordered a small band of Clears (about fifty) to march south and try to take Humontis for themselves. Unfortunately for them, the Beastlands decided to enter the war effort, taking poorly the invading Clear force, and decimated the Lacunan soldiers.
In Talen'sul, the war plan was made to have all the Elementals head to Ronduin in a concerted effort to drive out and finish off the Clears and their army. The treacherous Storm that had delivered Shadow into the hands of the enemy, Darkstorm, also wrote a missive informing Chase of the recent activities. His motives suspect, people began to question the loyalty of Darkstorm to the Elementals and some investigation revealed his dark nature. A battle ensued between the Storms and other Elementals. With the arrival of Naurorod's troops, Darkstorm took those Storms loyal to him and fled back to Maelstrom, leaving only those loyal to Shadow behind to help with the war effort.
The Elementals decide to change their plan, suspecting the Clears may be aware of their original ones. The Minds and the Fires work together and decide to take out the aid that Khelek was supplying Chase. The Minds teleported the Fire forces into the heart of Khelek where the Fire leader, Damien was able to draw Jokull out and assassinate him. With support from Khelek cut off, and the Clears expecting the Fires and Minds to sweep down on Ronduin from the north, the Winds, Storms, and Earths came in from the west and hit Ronduin with everything they had. Miraculously, Shadow and Cascata survived the assault despite being used to do as much damage as possible to opposing armies. The Clears, in their attempt to flee, were slain and all their enslaved Elementals regained their self-will, thus putting an end to the war.
As a final act of anger and hatred towards the Clears for the suffering caused by Chase and his band, Damien - while leading the Fires back home to Naurorod - stopped long enough to combine the might of all Fires and straining his own powers past their healthy limits to set Lacuna on fire and draw molten lava from the heart of the land itself to bury Lacuna, wiping it off the face of the continent, and killing scores of Clears in the process. Those who survived fled and formed a refugee camp that would later become the nation of Reave.
