"Good morning," Harmony murmured sleepily as she took a seat at the table for breakfast. Her eyes were still mostly closed and she barely paid attention to the food.

Filly eyed her daughter. "Were you up all night?"

"No," Harmony lied. "Just couldn't sleep much. Nightmare."

Filly's expression softened and she mentally caressed her daughter. "Poor thing. Try to take a nap later today then."

"I will," Harmony yawned again, and then drowsily surveyed breakfast. She hesitated over it all before helping herself to some porridge and milk.

Filly frowned and wondered if she wasn't coming down with something. It wasn't much to eat and not what Harmony usually preferred. "Are you sure you're feeling all right, dear?"

"Yes Mother," Harmony sighed, pushing the oats around with her spoon and wishing Filly would stop asking so many questions. Filly bit her lip and, feeling fussy, got up and moved over to touch Harmony's forehead. Harmony brushed her hand away and peered at her with a mildly irritated look.

Filly gasped, "Stars above, what happened to your eye?"

Harmony blinked. "What's wrong with my eye?"

"It's... orange."

Schuldig had been listening to the conversation with half an ear. Despite the fact that every morning for almost the past month, he'd been contacting the villages for reports on the winter wolves and other predators' activities daily, he still didn't like to be awake that early. His usual breakfast started with him in a near-doze that lasted half the meal, until the chatter and clinking of utensils woke him a bit more. Then he'd just take whatever was nearest his plate and start eating until he was awake.

He'd still been in the early stages, but Filly's exclamation got him to perk up a little. "Don't you mean red?" he mumbled as he stifled a yawn with one hand and picked up something to bite into with the other. Smoked bacon, he noted. Good, something he liked.

"Did you get something in your eye, kiddo?" he asked, taking a bigger bite and reaching for a piece of warm bread to smother with cherry jam. He looked over at Harmony then, and paused with the bread partway to his mouth.

"The fuck?"

Filly took Harmony's chin between her fingers and tilted her head so Schuldig could see better. "I mean orange."

Harmony jerked her head free, frowning at them. "I'm fine."

"Harmony, your eye changing color does not fall in the realm of 'fine,'" Filly told her sternly. But though she sounded irritated, she was mostly just very worried. "Did you do anything to it recently? Get anything in it like Schuldig asked?"

Harmony shook her head. Now that they were talking so much about it, she reached up to rub her eyes compulsively. Filly held her hands down. "Why don't you go to your room? And Schu perhaps we should go look at your book since I am stumped as to what it could be."

"Seeing as how it's the abridged version, I'm not sure 'spontaneous eye colour change' is going to be in the index," Schuldig said, and bit into his bread. He could just tell the day was going to be a headache, and he wasn't about to get into the thick of it on an empty stomach.

"Does your eye hurt or anything?" he asked around the bite he'd just taken. "And is your vision okay?"

"No it doesn't hurt," Harmony answered. "Yes, I see fine."

"And you didn't know it'd changed?" Filly asked.

"Not at all," Harmony answered. She fidgeted in her seat. "Can I go now? I'm fine. It's probably nothing."

Filly rolled her eyes and sighed. "Do you know how many people I see who told themselves the same thing when they had something that wound up being very much something?"

I hate having a healer for a mother, Harmony thought irritably as she sank lower in her seat, scowling.

"Did you get into anything unusual recently?" Schuldig asked as he poured himself a cup of tea. "Food, drink, the herbs I brought back from Flux?" Not that any of those drugs had effect on eye colour that he was aware.

He paused and peered at Harmony again. "Your 'Uncle Sol' hasn't been by to see you lately, has he?"

~At this rate, Soahc is the only explanation I could think of~ Filly told Schuldig, exasperated. "Have you spoken with any strangers at all?"

"How about we narrow the field and ask if I breathed any air yesterday?" Harmony replied snidely. Her posture grew tense.

"No one!" Harmony answered and scrunched down a little farther in her seat. At this rate she was going to slide right under the table.

"Harmony," Filly said more softly now, "it's important. For all we know, this is the sign of something that could well be very dangerous to you."

Harmony closed her eyes tight and shook her head. ~I'm not supposed to say~ she told them both quietly.

Harmony didn't respond in words--just a sense of distress at what Schuldig said and of jealousy and fear.

~He's my secret~ she protested, petulant and sad.

He? Filly frowned deeply at that. ~Who?~

Harmony reached back and under her hair in a motion that looked like she was rubbing her neck. She remained silent.

"Harmony!" Filly snapped, her patience now at an end.

Harmony jumped and shook her head. She tried to speak telepathically and still hide it, even though even she knew that might well be an impossible feat with her father right there.

~No, I can't, you can't just hide from parents like that. They'll find out... Please, Tom, they won't hurt you, I promise...~

"What?" Harmony gave Schuldig an odd look. "No?" ~I told you. Please, Tom, please?~ "Tom is my friend."

Filly's stern look did not abate. "Well I think I had better see this Tom fellow in case he gave you something."

Harmony lifted up her hair a bit. "Come on. Come on, it's safe."

The little orange faerie she'd been hiding flew out and hovered above her head. Filly jumped at the sight of it. "What the hell?"

"Don't hurt him," Harmony pleaded.

Tom the faerie landed on top of her head and clung to her hair desperately. "You said they wouldn't hurt me!"

"And they haven't. They won't."

Schuldig stared. Tom was apparently a...tiny orange butterfly-man?

"Filly? You're seeing this, too, right?" Schuldig said. "I haven't taken some mushrooms and forgotten about it?" Though considering that until Filly had commented on Harmony's eye, he'd been almost asleep, he doubted he'd have been able to unlock the box he'd put the small cache of goodies he'd gotten from the Addicts.

"No I see it too," Filly replied slowly. "Harmony, what in the name of the Elements is that thing?"

"He's not a thing," Harmony answered reproachfully. "He's a he. His name is Tom and he's a faerie. We're friends, right Tom?"

Tom seemed to calm a tad but not very. "Y-yep. Best friends. Forever and ever."

Harmony beamed at that. Finally a friend who was here and who wouldn't be going anywhere. Even if he was tiny and not human.

"I met him yesterday," Harmony explained. He was fluttering outside the window. At first I thought he was just a butterfly so I opened the window to let him in. Then he flapped some dust into my face and said we were friends. I don't really understand it, but he IS very nice if kind of a scaredy cat."

"I think whatever that dust was, it hurt your eye," Filly murmured in concern.

"Nu uh, I wouldn't hurt my friend," Tom protested. "That was faerie dust. It's what makes us friends."
