Thusfar, they'd encountered no demons. But people; lots of people. Many individuals in Anarlina had fled to the eastern provinces--or even beyond. The steady trickle of refugees began near the Anarlinan border as people fled into Talen'sul, hoping to find safer land for the time there.
Ninita was a steady companion, often trying to initiate conversations but not pushing Thoth to speak. At times, she would just natter away to herself in her quiet little voice, barely heard above the clop of the horses' hooves unless she was in an active conversation. And she seemed so eager to serve. Disturbingly eager, offering at every turn to assist Thoth with anything and nearly everything. At one point, Ninita confessed merely to having a demanding childhood growing up and that it had rubbed off on her in adulthood. She aimed to please.
As they drew nearer to their destination, however, she became quiet for increasingly long stretches. Nerves--the waiting, anticipation, was almost as bad as the knowledge that they would eventually come up against some kind of hardship. After all, why send her if the Forces didn't suspect that to be true?
Most of the New Hope province was just the same as the rest of Anarlina. Lots of farmland. Homes were done in the Anarlinan style. But the first little hamlet they came across gave view of the old cultures. The particular twenty-man strong hamlet they'd passed through had been composed mostly of men and women of Fire and Spice who had fled to Celentia and, from there, to Naruta. As a result, there was a very organized layout to what few buildings there were, and anything that was meant to attract visitors was pained in bright colors or adorned in eyecatching decor. These buildings screamed, 'Spend money in me!' The homes were more subdued looking.
And now they were coming up near the heart of New Hope. Even from a distance, it was clear that it was going to be a very bright town. Firegemmers seemed to love lots of color.
