Humontis is broken up into two sections—the Fields of Flora and the Gaia Caves. First, we’ll cover Flora. Flora encompasses the entire surface area of Humontis. Since Humontis itself does not spread too far beyond the borders of the mountain itself, this may not sound like a great deal of space until one stops and considers just how large Humontis is. While it is not the tallest mountain on the continent, it’s still the largest. The slope is a very gentle rise and still reaches an appreciable height. Almost all of Flora is composed of farmland with a few other buildings for commerce and convenience (such as a couple of inns, some eateries, and several general goods and farming goods stores.) The farms are generally very large stretches of land belonging to what are the wealthiest people in Humontis. These stretches of land are too large for a single family to possibly maintain, and so much of this land is let out to other families to farm. At the very top of Humontis rests one of the three temples in Humontis. This one is a general temple to all of the Forces and is somewhat smaller than the temple found in the Gaia Caves. This temple is also formed almost entirely of living trees bent together to form a surprisingly sturdy and functional building.
The inside of Humontis, the Gaia Caves, is a little more complicated. Entry shafts at the north, east, and west allow access to the inside of the mountain. These shafts open into an enormous central cavern that is the heart and bulk of Gaia. Here, most of the businesses and homes of the residents of Humontis can be found as well as the political district of Obsidian. The buildings are almost entirely made of stone as opposed to the almost entirely wooden structures found in Flora. This is more of a matter of ease in building than because of a lack in money. Families desiring more wood in their homes can easily afford to buy the timber to do so. Most of the buildings are flat topped as there is no external weather to be concerned about. Homes of richer residents are often topped with gargoyles or other ornamental stone statues. The many mineshafts of Humontis can be found on the outer edges of Gaia. These tunnel downward before branching outward so lifts must be used to reach them (or riding pillars of the earth and stone itself for those who have the energy to waste on such showy displays.)
Obsidian is located towards the south end of Gaia. While there is nothing to mark the boundary between Obsidian and the rest of Gaia aside from a solitary street, most natives have no problem pointing out where they consider the demarcation of the two districts to be. Most of Obsidian is composed of residential buildings that house the political entities of Humontis as well as a few other governmental function buildings. A solitary building stands out above the rest (literally!) This is the Obsidian Spire the political heart of Humontis. The spire begins in the center of the Obsidian district and rises up through the earthen ceiling to poke out above the surface for three stories. This allows entry into the building from both the Gaia level and the Flora level. Here the Lord or Lady of Humontis conducts their business along with all the various senators.
The secondary Temple of the Forces is found attached to the even larger and more impressive Temple of the Earth Mother. These buildings are found in the dead center of Gaia with a large open space around them to allow massive gatherings to occur if necessary. The building is both the spiritual home of the people and the symbolic heart of the culture.
