Jonathan and Sashi nodded to each other from their respective places. Jonathan was a bit nervous as he eyed Sashi – she stood confidently, her hand axe held at the ready. He hated axes. He really hated axes. It wasn’t that he was helpless before them but defense against them weren’t his strong suit and as it wasn’t a terribly popular weapon choice in Anarlina, that hadn’t been a problem.
“Ready?” the judge asked.
“Ready,” both intoned, and then leapt into action. Both touched their signs and chanted – Jonathan formed a buckler of ice about his arm Sashi had formed a fist sized fireball which she lobbed at Jonathan. The man startled at that and brought his shield protectively in front of him as he backed up, but it fell harmlessly short of him. A distraction! Sashi had charged after her attack and was suddenly upon him, bringing her axe down with full force. Since he already had his shield to bear he brought it up – belatedly realizing that against an axe it wasn’t the brightest idea.
Despite being a practice axe, it still struck very hard. Jonathan’s ice shield held, but his entire arm went numb from the blow and he fell back a couple steps. He didn’t stop to think about the sensation much and instead brought his sword up in a hard and quick slash at Sashi – even if it didn’t connect, he wanted her to back up. To his luck, though, it did – striking Sashi hard on the left hip.
“Penalty to Sashi!” the judge called out. “Must favor left side, decreased maneuverability!”
Sashi grunted in annoyance and shifted her wait to the right. As she tried to limp back, Jonathan lashed out with a quick and vicious kick to the inside of her right leg. Unbalanced, Sashi went down hard. Jonathan, scenting victory, was quick to bring his sword at Sashi’s neck and demand yield. Sashi, however, still maintained a strong grip on her axe. In a flash it was up, catching Jonathan’s sword under the axe head. Sashi held the axe upside down and so when she twisted and pulled as hard as she could on the sword, Jonathan’s grip loosened and he almost lost his sword. Sashi’s axe slid along the length of the blade, freeing itself, and she quickly brought it around to his ankle as she rolled to her knees.
It caught before Jonathan could move out of the way.
“Penalty to Jonathan!” the judge called out. “Right leg disabled!”
Jonathan wordlessly lifted his right leg up until only the toe of his boot touched the ground. As Sashi ‘struggled’ back to her feet (mindful of her hip injury) he brought his sword hard in a downward diagonal slash. Sashi blocked again with ease and put her weight forward hoping to unbalance Jonathan this time. Unable to make much use of his right leg, he went down. Now it was Sashi’s turn to bring him to yield. Not wanting to risk exposing herself by reaching for his neck, she brought her axe in a downward chop for Jonathan’s chest, hoping that her speed would beat his.
Jonathan’s shield came up to intercept the attack, and since Sashi hadn’t put her full weight into the attack, she managed to not crack the shield again. As Jonathan tried to bring his sword to chop at her neck, Sashi got her axe back up to block – the light weight of the hand axe allowed her to make quick movements, and prone Jonathan was unable to get the swiftness he needed to catch her by surprise. She even stood over him in just the right spot to make kicking at her awkward and not worth the energy. The stood at a temporary stalemate as Sashi would try to get a fatal cut in and Jonathan would intercept her but find himself unable to react quickly enough to take advantage of her openings. What’s more was he couldn’t reach his sign either.
Both their strength began to flag but it was Jonathan – in his awkward position – that failed to meet one of Sashi’s blows. Her axe rested against him lightly.
“The match goes to Sashi!” the judge declared. Sashi grinned and helped Jonathan to his feet.
