The wind settled calmly as she neared Flux, if only for a night’s rest. Sharp ledges prevented her from sliding down with her rough boots the rest of the way, so she had to continue her patient climb downwards, gloves clutching jutted stones to use as handles when the path was cut off. It would still take her a few hours’ walk until she reached an inn of some sort and this would be later than she expected as evening had already passed. She had meant to pass through Talen’sul but an uncertain wariness gripped her so she had decided to spent the other half of the day descending the mountain even though it should have taken her a day’s time. She had not stopped to eat – only to rest, and only twice. By now, her stomach was tight and ached unbearably as she longed to reach a warm meal and bed before the night was done. Distracted, her footing slipped and she fell the last few meters, still thinking about stews and coverlets as she hit the wet, hard ground and cried out. Her stifled cry of pain shot through the silent night air and blended in with the tantalizing cry of the crickets beyond the grassy lay of land that followed through a small wood before her destination. She had landed roughly, and was cushioned by her left arm hidden beneath her stomach and in the large sleeve of her robe-like jacket. Pulling it out, she turned on her back to face the sky and let a low growl escape her parched lips, stomach and arm sore.
