(Grandisle, spring 1017)

It had been a long couple of seasons, but Kamilla had to admit she'd gotten better at putting on a happy face for the man in charge. Keeping it all bottled up inside. True there were still moments she enjoyed, like spending time with Adrian. That was getting more and more interesting lately.

But what has occupied her mind the most is the egg. Soahc's gift. Whenever she finds herself alone, or with extra time on her hands, she tends the egg. Feeds it tales of the pirates, the evil usurpers who had taken their land. It did not matter that it was only an egg she spoke to, Soahc himself had told her to nourish it with her hatred, and so she did.

Kadoc played a part, yes. He helped to keep the egg a secret, and protect it. But he had not grown to care for it like she had. He was too busy keeping up appearances. It was Kamilla who placed all of her hope into the creature inside the egg.

This night was no different, Kamilla holed up in her room, recounting stories to her egg.

As time passed the egg seemed to grow increasingly hotter and tonight it was almost burning to the touch. While Kamilla was speaking with the egg a crack suddenly formed, a bit of steam hissing out of it, and the egg wobbled back and forth.

Kamilla gasps in surprise. This was it, the egg was finally hatching! She gives the egg a little bit more room, if the first crack was any indication she doesn't want to be right beside it when it opens.

It took some time, though was considerably faster than, say, a chicken hatching. The egg cracked and rocked, cracked and rock, and then finally fell apart in steam and smoke. What emerged was a small bird made entirely out of fire, though it did seem to have a general form to it and its feet weren't made of flame. It flapped a little, sending little embers into the air, and made a melodious peep cry.

Kamilla stares at it for a moment. It's a...fire bird? As adorable as it looks how is she supposed to take care of it? Would it set things on fire? Would it burn if she touched it?

She shakes her head, trying to put aside all her doubt for the moment, and holds out a hand to the little chick. "Hello there sweetie." She'd find a way to care for it, she would!

[Kender Bard]

The chick tilted its head, regarding Kamilla for a moment before hopping over and onto her hand; its flames do not seem to burn her; it is a little warm, but not uncomfortably so. The phoenix chick peeps at her again.

Kamilla beams and cups her other hand underneath before pulling the chick up into her lap. She had some fruit and dried fish that she'd been snacking on earlier nearby. Not sure what it might eat, and not wanting it to choke, she tears off a very small piece of fish and hold it out to the chick.

[Kender Bard]

The chick chirps at her again before hopping closer, head tilting this way and that as it looks at the offering. Satisfied, it snatches up the fish greedily.

Good, something it would eat. She breaks up the rest of the fish into similarly tiny pieces until the chick seems full. Horribly curious, she hold her hand very close to the chick's body. It was warm, but she wanted to know if she risked burning herself on the small bird.

[Kender Bard]

The warmth does increase a bit but nothing near to painful; and there was in fact a body underneath all that flame.

Sated and apparently a bit drowsy, the chick 'fluffs' itself a bit, the flames rising up abruptly before settling down, close to its actual body, like a small, tame flame.

[Skittlebug]

Kamilla melts. She's sure that, once grown, it will be fearsome, but for now she can't help finding the little thing absolutely adorable.

She pulls a drawer halfway open and sets the chick down on some of her clothing, hesitating a moment to be absolutely sure nothing is catching on fire before leaving it. She has to tell Kadoc!
