[Skittlebug]

A sudden scream of 'Fire!' in the merchant district pierces the night, quickly followed by cries for help as a small family scrambles out of their shop. The neighbors are quickly woken and a handful of people take off to find help. The fire is quickly becoming more visible through the windows, sending smoke up into the air and threatening to spread to the adjacent buildings.

A couple of people with Water and Fire signs do what they can to try and tame the flames, but are quickly worn out. The fire had had too much time to take hold already.

Callum pushed and shoved and shoulder his way through the crowds, growling and snapping at anyone who didn't move fast enough. "Out of the way!" he huffed in annoyance. "Healer coming through, move your colossal ass sir, yes sometime this year, healer coming through!"

Managing to get to the forefront, Callum eyed the flames before sweeping his gaze around the area. "Anyone wounded, come here!" But until he got someone to work on, he touched the Fire on his ring finger and began working to snuff out the edges of the fire, hoping to help contain the fire.

Larissa was still stuck in the habit of taking late night walks. She would go to bed and wake up mid way through the night, not know what else to do she'd go for a walk. Something about the suggestion that Demon had made so long ago stuck with her.

This was another one of those nights as she heard the scream of fire from not far away. She took off running and arrived on a scene. Seeing a throng of people standing around she began to encourage people to move back and away from the fire.

"Is anyone left in there?" She asked. "Quick, get pales and start a line to the well!" She yelled grabbing a few panicked people and giving them instruction.

The woman from the first house rushes up to Callum with a crying, coughing baby, "Please, my baby, she won't stop coughing and she's choking! It must have been the smoke, she breathed it in." She practically thrusts her baby at him, frantic and mumbling more about the smoke.

Brought to their senses by Larissa's shouts, much of the crowd that had formed rushes for pails and forming a line to the nearest well, though it will take some time to make any headway.

"Gah!" Callum exclaimed as he held the child awkwardly. Maybe if you stopped treating her like a sack of grain. But he bent his head over the child and gave her Efil's Breath to clear the smoke from her lungs once he ascertained the child was still choking. Sometimes he'd have killed for a Wind sign.

"There," he said, coughing slightly as well. "Nothing I can do for the crying but she's not choking anymore." He examined her over for burns, sweeping a glance over the mother as well. "Did either of you get burnt?"

Seeing the line forming and work finally getting done, Larissa moved to the front of the line closest to the fire. "How did this start?" She asked someone as she tossed water onto the fire as it was handed to her. "Is anyone still in there?"

The woman beams gratefully and takes her child back, cradling the girl protectively. At Callum's question, she starts, "Oh, I hit my arm getting her out of the house, I don't know how bad it is." She turns a bit, letting him see the back of her shoulder where her shirt is torn and sooty. Under the tear is a good sized gash, as if she'd scraped against a nail.


Seeing that his wife and are being taken after, the man of the house joins the bucket line beside Larissa, his young boy sticking close by, trying to get his father's attention. "My family's all out now, the fire woke the boy and he got us all up." He watches the fire grimly, thinking of all the things his family is losing. "No idea how it started."

"You'd certainly be crying later," Callum muttered. He grabbed a flask of non-healing water out of his supplies and washed the cut before slapping a salve on it and binding it. "There, now. Go away." He re-arranged his things. "Next!" he bellowed.

Larissa sighed and continued to throw water on the fires. "I'm so sorry for the loss of your home." She said softly to the man as she continued about her work. "Hopefully we'll find some clues after the fire is out that will help put your mind to ease about all this."

A couple of people with burns quickly take the woman's place, though there aren't many injured, and those that are aren't at any serious risk.


The man nods grimly, "Right, let's just concen-" he stops mid sentence to give his son an exasperated look, "all right, all right, what is it Tom?"

The boy stops his whining and becomes serious now that his father is listening to him, "It woke me up, something broke the window, see there?" He points to one of the second story windows which, indeed, was broken as if something had been thrown through it. "My window broke and then there was fire and you wouldn't listen to me." He finishes with a 'hhmf' at being ignored for what seemed like so long.

Larissa looked at the little boy and tried to give him a smile. "You did the right thing and I'm sure everyone is very proud of you." She said and there was a genuine kindness to her voice as she spoke. "What was it that broke your window?" She asked as she passed along another pale to be thrown onto the fire.

"I didn't see," the boy pouts at Larissa, "but someone threw it, didn't they? How else would it happen." He turns to his father and sniffs, "Why would someone set our house on fire?"

"I'm sure they'll figure out who did it." she said trying to reassure the child. "Was there something on it? Any kind of writing or a paper?" She asked.

The boy's expression drops, "I didn't look, the fire started and I ran out of my room."

His father puts a hand on his shoulder, glancing to Larissa, "That's all right, isn't it, and I'd much rather you'd have done that then stay in the fire."

Larissa nodded. "Absolutely. It's more important that you got out of there and that you're ok. You can get a new house and new stuff, we can't get a new you." She smiled at him. "By the way my name is Larissa. What's yours?"
