A Mind, Thelon thought again as he settled in the chair in his study. A Mind.

What if it was one of his Minds?

He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. No reason to get all worked up yet. He would need his concentration.

Leaning forward to touch the two signs on his forehead with one palm, he focused all his mental energy. Chanting quietly, he began to reach out and touch all the luminous nodes on his vast Sensatian net of Minds. Each one, he asked short, but urgent questions.

Do you know this man? And he would supply a mental picture. Do you know where he is?

Most of his enquiries recieved a denial in return. One mind though, the damaged mind of Latia hesitated, disbelief colouring the woman's thoughts. She'd been living quietly in the city as a tailor's assisstant and trying to forget her past misdeeds. Sessions with the mind healers had helped with her obsession with her dead twin, but she would never be entirely normal.

Now, she sent Thelon an almost whimpering, pained question. ~Master Thelon, WHY?~ Underlying the sent message was the thought that Thelon's mental image was very close to how she imagined her twin would have looked and shock that Thelon would torment her this way.

Thelon pulled his fragmented concentration and focused it entirely on Latia. He knew to be patient here. And so in his most calm and soothing mind-voice, one he'd used on a spooked horse in the clan, he said, ~This man was seen in Fira on the day that my wife died. I'm looking for him. I'm sorry if he makes you think of your lost twin. But have you seen him in the flesh?~

Latia seemed to mentally squirm under Thelon's questioning. ~I... Don't know... Maybe? I thought...~ She trailed off nervously.

How many times had she thought she'd seen her twin? But... No, no... She couldn't have.

Thelon had to resist the urge to give her a mental shake and scream. ~Please. This is incredibly important. If you even thought you have seen this man, please tell me where you saw him last to the best of your recollection.~

Latia flinched, phyisically and mentally, but replied in a mental whisper. ~Here, once. Then in Maelstrom, when I was delivering some clothing for my master.~

She'd followed him in Maelstrom, she remembered, only to lose him in the crowd. And a day's pay when her annoyed employer discovered she'd completely forgotten to make her delivery.

Thinking of the look-alike of her twin, her memories started to drift back, back to the beastlands cave she, her twin and some Beast-child friends had been exploring, to the cave in she'd barely escaped, to learning she'd been the only one to get out. That her twin and friends had likely been crushed when the unstable cave had collapsed completely.

Latia whimpered mentally, struggling to push those thoughts away.

Likely, but not impossible, Thelon thought. But he was less interested in the blood relationship between Latia and this man and more in finding him and procurring information about the death of his wife.

Trying to pin down a Mind was a hard and elusive game. This was the only lead he had. He could always return home and pick up where he left off. For now, he would try his luck in Maelstrom.

~Thank you, Latia~ he said and pulled his mind away from hers only to reach out to Shadow. ~I have a lead in your kingdom. Would you mind terribly if I investigated in Aegestrom?~

Shadow's tone burned with rage, but it was an ice cold fury which somehow felt more deadly then any blast of hot tempter. I have no objections, but I'm coming with you, Thelon. His tone softened, just a fraction, as he added, I owe that to Tres...

~Then I will meet you outside your palace~ he said, and teleported away.
