“Poor dear,” Dusk murmured, echoing Twilight’s sentiment as Trevor led his wife away. She wondered if it had been wise for him to bring her into the crowded rooms so soon after arriving. She couldn’t recall Nagi acting quite so shy when they had first met him.
But there was little time to ponder the subject. Once the Elrics had gone, there were the Brightmores. “It’s wonderful to see you both again,” she greeted with a bright smile.
There was one thing to be said about meeting most people now: after the ceremony, she could spend more time just celebrating and less worrying about greeting this or that leader.
“All right,” Nagi said, agreeing. None of them had ever met Naurorod’s leader before, though Khelek had extended invitations to the events it had hosted in the past few years. At least they could be introduced now.
He knew of Khelek’s history with the desert Fires, of course. The Fires (and most of Naruta) had not been pleased when Khelek had sided with the Clears about a decade ago, and after the Fires’ part in retaliating, Khelek’s Ices were about as happy with Naurorod as Naurorod was with them. He hoped that some of their problems might be reconciled, but it wasn’t likely if Naurorod wouldn’t even open the lines of communication.
~The Forces have been very kind,~ Zira said as he turned to his son. There was a feeling of profound love and respect behind his words—he wasn’t simply giving a rote reply.
“Shyamal,” he murmured, “you’ve never met Schuldig before. He isn’t going to harm you.” Zira knew Schuldig to be a blunt man who rarely pulled his verbal punches, and who was still oddly appealing despite (or perhaps, because of) a complete lack of tact or propriety. He did not, however, think he would be “mean” to a child, even if he were to find out who Shyamal really was.
Autumn frowned and looked up at Schuldig. “Why’s he scared?”
Schuldig gave a one-shouldered shrug, his expression distant as he focused on Emerald. “Maybe he knew someone that looked like me in a past life.”
The little girl just blinked at him, confused.
~Is that an ‘um’ of not knowing what I’m talking about or an ‘um’ of not knowing how to tell me that Zira’s kid actually is Shyamal brought back to life without having me blow up before the wedding?~
“She’s as pretty as her mother,” Zack declared with a delighted expression as he looked at the child. “Can I hold her? And if you want to see Autumn, she’s probably with my other half and her brother. Just look for a tall, big pair of white wings.”
