Leif wandered around the temple, chewing on the end of his pipe as he sauntered toward the Taedean quarter. He wasn't an especially religious man, but he wasn't there for religious purposes. Since his meeting with Mikhail, bits of their conversation had kept cropping up in his thoughts.
With not much else to occupy his time, he had turned the encounter over in his head as he thought of it, which was surprisingly frequent. Leif had come to the conclusion that he was alone, in more than one sense of the word. And when he was able to notice, if he thought about it, he was lonely. He thought Mikhail probably was, too.
Mikhail could see spirits of other people all the time, and even his own wife, but the more he'd thought about that, the worse it sounded. To see someone you love in that state.... It was like they were there, but not. Leif had never been in love with anyone, but he remembered the incident he'd had involving some odd red flowers he'd found in the Fields. He'd ended up feeling very attached to some stranger for about a day, and he remembered wanting to be near him and be held by him. If real love was anything like that, it must hurt a lot to have someone like that and still NOT have her. The first time Leif had had that thought, he'd been in a half-lucid state, and in trying to imagine that sort of pain and longing, he'd found himself in tears. (He tried not to think about it unless he was sober now.)
He thought that might be worse than just not having anyone around, period. Since it was Spirit Night, and the priest wouldn't be able to see any spirits at all, Leif thought he might want some company. Arriving in Taed's area, he approached one of the somber-robed priests and asked to see Mikhail.
