"You should rest," Yinepu said to his human companion, who he'd been watching pace around the outskirts of the clan.
Rashne turned his head and growled softly in warning. "I'm too worked up to rest," he muttered. "And I'm not the only one."
Many of his clanmates had been oddly snappish, including some of the gentlest Seerelings he was acquainted with.
"I know," the jackal admitted. It was so strange; he'd never seen anything like it. It was vaguely similar to the madness he'd smelled on some men and animals before, but there was no frothing at the mouth or fear of water, and hardly anyone had been scratched or bitten before their behaviour changed. And, most tellingly, it lacked that unique scent, for which he was grateful. That madness was known to be fatal.
"I just...let me...." Rashne snarled and raked a clawed hand roughly through his hair. The snapping sound of a twig made him turn swiftly, and his lips pulled back in an ugly snarl as a jaguar stepped out of the bushes.
"Easy, friend," Yinepu said, getting to his feet. "She's a Seerling's companion."
But Rashne wasn't listening. He growled deep in his chest, then leaped at the big cat, who yowled loudly as the Beast's claws pierced her flesh.
Yinepu howled in alarm, shouting for any Beasts nearby to restrain his companion before he killed someone else's. Or before the jaguar killed him.
