The Eyes and Ears of the Guild

Aaron walks into the Red Roc tavern as he usually does at the end of a day of guard duty. He's been spending a good deal of time combining the resources of both of his professions to help with tracking down the survivors among Daniel's supporters and keeping the guild members he comes across out of hot water as much as he can manage. At the end of another long day, a pint of ale will be a welcome treat.

The day's not totally done yet, though. He's meeting Mat, though keeping with his usual habit, Aaron doesn't look around for the other man. He just plops down at a table alone and orders his drink, idly listening to the noisy chatter around him.

A little while later Mat walks into the tavern and takes a seat at the bar to order his drink. It's only when the thick clay mug is in his hand does Mat take a cascal seeming glance around the tavern. Faking a look of mild surprise upon seeing Aaron, Mat gets up and walks over.

"Aaron, long time, no see," he remarks to give the appearence of two friends having a random meeting. "How's work been?" he adds, taking a seat.

"Hey, Mat," the Fire replies, taking a swig of ale. "It's been hectic lately. I'm glad things have finally calmed down after that mess last season. How've you been faring?"

"Well I won't be sorry when Acqua and I can take the kids and move into Maelstrom," Mat remarks with a grimace. "A man should never share his brother-in-law's house if he wants time with his wife."

Satisfied that no one's paying the pair any attention, Mat gets to the point, quietly. "You're a good man, Aaron. You've proved that over and over again. I'd trust you with my life, and more importantly, I'd trust you with Acqua and the children's lives. Will you be my eyes and ears in Talen'sul?"

Aaron's eyes widen slightly at that and he grumbles, "That was more information than I really needed," before taking another swallow of his drink.

"Aye, I'll do it," he says in an undertone. "You and Kit are worth taking a knife for. After all this running around lately, feels almost like I've been at the job already." Though without the added bonus of keeping his two hundred a year in his own pocket. As for the added hazard if he's found out, well. Neither of his jobs were that safe in the first place.

Mat chuckles at Aaron's expression at what, for Mat, is a fairly innocent comment. "You've never been one for spending your nights at the guild, have you?" he asks with a smirk. "Thanks Aaron. I'm grateful and I know Kit will be as well." Taking a swallow of his drink, Mat adds, "Any suggestions for who should take the Ilyamen and Humontis jobs? I've got a few ideas, but I'd welcome suggestions from you."

"I've never even been down that way," Aaron comments. "Not a lot of travel opportunities in the city guard, you know." He swirls the ale in his mug a bit. "You wouldn't want Stealy, but I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that." He thinks a moment. "I have heard good things about Amy down in Humontis, but I don't know her personally."

Mat nods thoughtfully. "I know Amy a little," he murmurs. "She and Echo were friends. I'll talk to her, see if she'll do the Humontis job. We'll have to keep an eye out in Ilyamen. There are a few people there I might consider at least." Changing the subject a little, Mat asks softly, "Anything happening in the guards I should know about?"

"Just the usual," Aaron murmurs. "Though since the attack, folks are a little more wary and a little less forgiving. Not that I can fault that, but I very strongly advise against playing tricks on the guard at the moment. Or getting caught in general," he adds, draining his mug.

Mat nods then drains his mug and stands up. "Well I better get home before the kids wear out Acqua and I'm sure you have things to do. See you around, Aaron." With a friendly wave, Mat heads out of the tavern.
