Zack sighed contentedly as he and Zira entered the palace courtyard. He'd thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Clan Fira, but it was good to be back. Even if it was turning cool again. Well, the weather suited Zira better anyway.
Zira had been looking much revived since they'd crossed into Maelstrom about a week ago. Though he had fallen in love with the desert's beauty, particularly at night, he couldn't handle the day's heat as well as Zack. From the time the sun rose, Zira had seemed to almost wilt like a white flower the hotter it became. He had quickly resumed his nocturnal habits in Naurorod, coming most alive after sunset.
"You don't want to go to the temple first?" Zira asked, flipping his long braid over one shoulder.
"I do and I don't, so since I can't really make up my mind and the palace is right here, I'll go see Twilight first," Zack said easily, though his eyes were bright with excitement.
They seemed almost a more vivid green than before, and Zack's eyes had always been a startlingly vibrant shade. Zira supposed it was due to his lover's darkened tan. Zira still burned rather easily, being fair-skinned even with his lord and lady's blessing, but after the redness had faded, he had ended up with a little colour himself, though next to Zack he looked pale as ever.
"It will be nice to see everyone," Zira agreed, walking with Zack into the building. "I just hope nobody's put off because I couldn't do anything trade-related." By "nobody," Zira of course meant the more waspish members of the court. He and Zack both knew the royals would be perfectly understanding.
"It'd look bad for them if they are," Zack replied, waving a hand. "They're having their own issues with trade and it would have been inconsiderate to push it under the circumstances. If the harpies can't get that through their heads, oh well."
They paused briefly for Zack to toss his packs into his own room before heading to Twilight's. He rapped loudly on the prince's door, calling, "Urgent news from abroad, your Princeliness." Zira just rolled his eyes.
