It seemed to be hours before they could finally slow down and collapse. It seemed to take just as long before they could breathe without feeling as though their chests would burst.
"How're the cuts, baby?" Yoko managed to ask, laboriously rising to a sitting position.
Vai also sat up, wincing as he gingerly probed his face. The dust of Naurorod had acted as a natural cauterizing agent, but the scabbing was still tender. "I'll be fine," he said ruefully. "Taed's fury! It was a bad idea to tell Alexian to write Sheila, and a worse idea to hope it wouldn't reach the right tavern for a long time."
"We were getting closer, too," Yoko said with real regret. "Imagine, a whole clan under us."
"We could've done it, babe." Vai sighed unhappily "We really could have."
The young woman crawled closer, laying her head in the other's lap. "It would have been hard," she softly admitted. "You would have had to marry a nice Clan girl, and I would have had to marry Ryuk, and have his children."
"That moron!" Vai spat, automatically stroking Yoko's hair, and looking mournfully at how much shorter it was now. "How could you even stand to let him touch you?"
"It was difficult," she whispered, closing her eyes. "He didn't have your passion, your possessiveness. He didn't have your character or your fire." She reached across Vai's thighs to lace her fingers with his. "You are the only one who can truly possess me. It would have been harder still to keep pretending you were only my brother."
"I might have gone insane, seeing you in that idiot's arms," Vai admitted, lengthening his caress to run down Yoko's neck and back. "All of our other targets have been mercifully short. To have to pretend, to keep going behind an entire clan's back, would have hurt so much more."
Yoko half smiled. "Let's stick with short marks from now on."
"Yes, let's. Think Sykes will have another target for us?"
"He always does." The young woman turned over so she was facing upwards, reaching to touch Vai's face. "Oh, baby, I'm so sorry this happened. I'll buy you some healing water the first chance I get, I promise."
Vai caught her hand and kissed her fingers. "Think we'll get that chance?"
"Aye." Yoko sat up. "If no one's come after us yet, I don't think they will. I think they might want to let us die."
"Good." Vai kissed his sister firmly. "Then let's rest until night and get going after that."
"Agreed." Yoko twined her arms around Vai and laid them both down. "It's a good thing you got the sack with all our money. We're going to need it."
