Amann didn't say anything for a stretch, watching the fire crackle and dance over the wood. All day, he'd run in mental circles, both to distract himself and to try to find a way out of the situation. And he hadn't come up with a damn thing. He was a con artist. He was a good one, too. And until this, he'd never once gotten into something he couldn't talk his way out of. He'd never been caught. He didn't know what to do now that he had been.
Acting the offended victim hadn't worked, and despite his initial confidence that he could at least work Renlo, after just a day of riding, he wasn't so sure. Gilda wasn't about to be swayed, and even though Renlo seemed nicer, he didn't seem any more likely to be helpful to him. Amann had the feeling that even if Renlo believed he were innocent, he would just apologize and still deliver him to Athrug.
Well, maybe being honest would at least make Gilda stop glaring at him every few minutes. Or it might make her glare more. "Specifically? Process of elimination. I didn't want to ride through Beleg's land to get to Autus, Mentis just has books, Acoia's got less than that, and Flux is too crazy. And if you're dead, what use is anything to you anyway, even if you were buried with it? Generally?" Amann shrugged and absently reached toward the fire with his left hand, coaxing small flames to twine around his fingers. "The Forces don't bother with little things. They bless nations' leaders and show power when big things happen, but the common folk aren't worth their notice." The last wasn't said with any heat or sign of anger. It was just the way things were to him, and he was fine with that.
