Kleio took a breath. He’d done everything he needed to except this. He could have reasoned that it was logically the best thing to do last but in reality he’d just been putting it off. He lifted a hand and knocked at Twilight’s door.
The Prince opened it, looking surprised that anyone would be looking for him. It was nearly dark out and he’d expected the day’s work done. The look of surprise was replaced with one of pleasure. “Hello Kleio,” he greeted his friend. “Come-“ The Prince stopped, his perceptive eyes taking in Kleio’s expression. His own smile faltered and then faded, moreso when he noticed that Kleio held a backpack. “K-Kleio?”
“Twilight,” Kleio murmured softly. “I have to go.”
“What? Why?” Twilight closed the door behind him and stood in the hallway with his friend. “What’s going on?”
“Zira and I are no longer courting,” Kleio said simply, and held up a finger when Twilight had been about to interject. “Don’t. Don’t say a word, please. Let me finish. I never wanted to spend my life with someone who couldn’t love me completely. That… That just wouldn’t be good.”
Unable to speak, Twilight clasped Kleio on the shoulder and looked at him mournfully.
“So, I’m going for a little bit,” Kleio mumbled. “There’s too much here. My heart is still hurting. It’s like aggravating a wound. I need to heal. I vaguely remember Ronduin. We passed through it on our way to Caelium. Well, I think I’d like to go back. That’s supposedly where all Waters came from. It’d be… It’d be nice to see.”
“Kleio, if you need anything, anything, then say it and it’ll be done,” Twilight said emphatically, embracing the other man. Kleio just hugged him in silence. Twilight took that as proof that there was nothing he could really give that Kleio wanted. “Please come home soon.”
“I will,” Kleio promised. “I already said goodbye to everyone else. My shop is shut down but you’ll keep an eye on it, yes?”
The Prince nodded. Kleio hugged him one more time, then bowed to his King, and finally departed.
