Character's Name: Declan William Malixi
Gender: Male
Age or Date of Birth: Winter of 1007
Signs: || Mind :: Centered at the top of his sternum && Water :: Centered on the inside of his left wrist ||
Home Nation: Ilyamen
Physical Description: Declan is an unfortunately unimposing teenager. With a petite frame for a male, muscle tone is lacking, as is any substantial weight to his figure. In spite of his upbringing, his diet borders malnutrition, which is hard to conceal. It reveals itself in the oily quality and brittleness of his messy lemon blond hair and in the ocassional dullness, primarily due to lack of energy, of his dark brown eyes. But any reprieve he may expect from working for his father in light of his physical state is simply nonexistent.
In terms of clothing, Declan's not a picky individual. He borrows heavily from Sensatia fashion, liking the ornate silken attire symbolic of his family, but also has a tendency to pick up anything that catches his attention. The simple tunic of New Morilanta has done just that, being among one of his preferred choices simply due to the mobility it allows, and the lack of brightness to the fabrics. However, anything that's given to him would appease him, or anything he could afford during his travels when he needs a new outfit. In general, doesn't care much for bright colors and will seek out neutral blacks, whites, greys, and browns when possible. He also does not care for wearing a cape.
Personality: Declan is fairly obedient by nature. He prefers that things take a natural course opposed to intervening unnecessarily, and that violence be avoided when possible. Most typically, he's calm with a slight optimistic streak, owing to the fact that he grew up with a particularly empathetic father who instilled in him a sense that if you can do anything in the world, let it be making someone else a little happier whenever possible. Through years of schooling, he's also become quite dedicated and focused with nearly everything he undertakes. Perhaps this is more habit, though.
In terms of socializing, Declan prefers to keep quiet until addressed by someone else. It isn't that he isn't confident in his knowledge or opinions, but he seems to believe that his age limits the need for him to contribute to a conversation. Among his peers, he's quite nervous earning him the label of shy. In part, his silence may be due to his suspicious nature. Part of him is always worried about people betraying him if he gets close to them. For all his kindness and optimism on the surface, he can be a bit cynical. And warmth, warmth is something reserved for a very select few. Even worse than coldness and cynicism, he's fairly arrogant when he feels threatened.
Morality is a keystone of his personality. He has his own sense of what is right and what isn't, and he's not afraid to stick by his decisions even when they're questioned by a higher authority. This contradicts Declan's obedient nature, but he's not often asked to do anything he would adamantly object to, so the imbalance remains somewhat unchallenged. Coupled with his protective instinct, he is generally likely to avoid causing chaos.
History: The Malixi family of Talen’sul were proud people. They were Minds who had a family streak of arrogance that was ill-suited for the close-knit community they inhabited, but they were known to contribute to the merchant workforce with their collective intelligence and diligence. By those who didn't earn something from the Malixi family's skill set, the Malixis were often looked upon as unpleasant overall. James Malixi, a Mind specializing in telepathy, was particularly sensitive to his family's unfavorable reputation.
James Malixi and his wife, Jane, bore three children while they lived in Talen’sul. There was Andre, their eldest son, Jane, their middle daughter, and William, the youngest son. Andre was a quick study and able to apprentice as a merchant, allowing him to travel often and see the world beyond Talen’sul. The younger Jane married early and began her family amid the crowded city.
William, the youngest, was far less dedicated to his future and absolutely against any further education than what his parents mandated while he was a boy. In 1002, he was given a decision to move with his father and mother to resettle in the newly formed Sensatia, or to remain in Talen’sul to fend for himself. He opted to remain where he was. His parents prospered in Sensatia while William cleared his teenage years, celebrating his twentieth birthday by himself in 1005. Finally, he was ready to make an honest living. He traveled to Ilyamen where he met his future wife. Two years later they had a son, Declan, who bore both William's Mind sign and his wife's Water sign.
Declan lived the first two years of his life under the care of his parents. While his father focused on earning money, his mother, Terrin, spent her time entertaining him. After his second birthday his father, anticipating a shift in the family finances, sent Declan off to live with James and Jane in Sensatia.
Declan was immediately provided with a tutor who was instructed to ensure he spoke properly and had a substantial vocabulary. James in particular did not want Declan sounding like a commoner- no, Declan would sound as proper as he and his wife. In a way they were making up for their mistakes with their youngest son, William. And they figured that Declan would need as firm a foundation as any child for when he returned to Ilyamen.
As years passed, Declan's tutor remained though the information changed. James never thought he'd have Declan for years, and yet, his fourth, then fifth birthday's passed without so much as a call from William. So, James continued to educate the boy. He had the means, and it was less time that James had to spend entertaining Declan, which at his age was preferential. In time, he did begin training him in his abilities, but he still enjoyed time without Declan near. As far as training was concerned, James didn't care much for the water sign the child bore, preferring to pretend that it simply did not exist.
Life became routine. In time, they seemed to forget Declan wasn't their responsibility.
It was Declan's ninth birthday when his father appeared at James' door to collect him. His eyes were alive with excitement as he told James of all he'd accomplished since handing off Declan. James and Jane had no choice but to give Declan back to William.
Declan found life very different. His mother and father had split ways when his mother fell in love with another man, leaving Declan to be raised solely by William. They'd never wed and William was far more interested in his work than his family, regardless, making the separation fairly unimportant to the couple. So Declan and William made due together, Declan focusing on his education now in Ilyamen while his father worked.
When Declan turned fourteen his father took him on as an apprentice, putting an end to his education. Declan didn't mind much. The change of pace that working as a merchant provided was a challenge in itself. At sixteen, his father's attention shifted to the hidden networks of trading. He purchased a slave girl for the family, not much older than Declan was to keep Declan company and to protect him when William sent Declan traveling to do the trading for him.
Writing/Post Sample: The slave trade was repugnant. It solidified that in Declan's mind, he was truly a Sensatia at heart, not a New Morilantan. What his father's rational for condoning the human suffering was beyond him. Declan's gaze was more of a glare as he was escorted by his father past the many people being sold off to the highest bidder. His brown eyes were void of the sympathy he was feeling as he took in their unimpressive collective wardrobe. Anger was safer.
None of the slaves were dressed to impress, but it showed off their natural beauty in a surprising way in Declan's view. Beyond the dirt clinging to their exposed skin and hair, they bore signs of appealing features. One might have a pleasing tint to their eyes, while another had finely sculpted lips boasting their youth and beauty.
Dec, William prompted, drawing Declan from his revere. Here now, pay attention, son. Declan directed his focus to his father, noting that they were standing in front of a rather burly looking man who was holding a young girl tightly by her arm. The girl was thrust at Declan while his father and the burly man marched off to speak. Declan's glare turned into a wide-eyed look of surprise as the teenage girl met his gaze steadily, undoubtedly waiting for him to speak.
"I-I'm Li-Liam," Declan introduced, far more comfortable stammering out his middle name than his first name. The girl smiled knowingly at him, offering a short wave that somehow didn't seem out of place, though the pair were hardly four feet from one another.
I'm Tasmin, sir. She seemed to purr. Unaccustomed to being referred to as sir, Declan's face lit with a blush. Mumbling inaudibly, he gestured for her to follow him before he lead her outside. This was going to be a very odd arrangement indeed.
Have you played in a forum RPG before?: Yep
Would you prefer to put your characters into a single topic or have your own subboard?: I'd like to keep a tracker on the same topic as the character's application if it's all the same to everyone and not too much of a hassle, so, a subboard would suit my purposes better.
Your Mentor: I really don't care. Whoever's not busy or wants to RP with me would suit me just fine. I'm interested in playing both a Mind and a Beast character to start things off, and I want them to frequent New Morilanta, so Kender Bard would probably make the most sense based on the descriptions.
