Luminous laughed--almost a cackle really--as she led the way out of her room, her two cats following at her heels.
By the time they'd reached the garden, she managed to get her amusement under control. "Hmm I'm going to miss this place." She flicked a leaf with her fingertip. "Much nicer than anything in Talen'sul. We really should try to make some kind of agreement with the Earths and see about making the land a little more fertile in and around Skyheort."

"There's beauty in Talen'sul too," Pas murmured. "You're going to be there after all. But I'm going to miss Maelstrom too. It's home, after all. But if we need to be in Talen'sul, then I'm just glad we'll be there together." He gave Luminous a small, shy smile. "I'd miss you if we were separated. I'd miss you a lot."
He hesitated, then said quietly, "You're the only person I lo-, uh, care about as much as my twin."

Luminous gave Pas a very somber look before turning towards him, reaching for both of his hands to hold. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Pas... You've been one of my dearest friends for as long as I can remember. Life without you, or Bas, or Aries would be a sad and empty one... And I will always, always treasure your companionship. Don't ever doubt that. We'll be friends for a long time, won't we?"

Pas pulled away when she tried to give him that friendly peek on the check and murmured, "Don't." At her question, he shook his head. "No, I don't." He took a deep breath and whispered, "But I've loved you since we were children, regardless of who and what you are."
He turned away to look out over the garden and let out a bitter chuckle. "Muma and Bas both tried to warn me... But I thought you felt the same." He glanced back at her and added softly, "You never gave me a reason to think otherwise." He didn't tear up, but he swallowed hard for a moment.

Luminous sighed and moved back a few steps away from him this time. "I also never told you anything to suggest it was more," she reminded him in careful tones. "I like to flirt, Pas. And I wanted to enjoy what I could of my freedom while I still can. But look at it from where I stand. Mother was already... Well, looking for potential suitors for me even before father died. I know that now, even if I didn't realize it then. Someday, I must marry. I don't believe for a moment that either side of Caelium would allow me to remain unwed for long once mother.... once her time comes. Making it a priority now instead of later is a safeguard. Disaster follows the Brightmore name around like a curse." Her mouth twisted into a frown of partial anger. "Few know that better than I."
"What I want matters very little. I'm sorry if you thought it could ever be more. I would like it if it could... But I also don't want to get us into something that we'll be forced to stop later. That'd hurt even more."

Pas nodded slowly and sighed, sounding deeply weary. "I understand what you're saying, Princess. I even know you are right. But what I know and what I feel are two different things." He looked out over the garden again, his expression quiet and distant. "I know, when I think about it, we'd never have worked out. But logic doesn't mean I don't feel... upset right now."
He turned to look at her now, his expression carefully emotionless now - as guarded as Acqua's had almost always been when Luminous was around. "You'll always have my Family's support... and my friendship. But right now I think I'd best leave. Would you please see to it that Lillian is escorted safely home when she and your brother are done for the day? Yours isn't the only family who disaster follows."

"Yes, fine," Luminous replied wearily, turning her back on him quickly so he couldn't see the dismay on her face. She squared her shoulders, her posture taking on a more formal and rigid stance. Her Maelstrom-ingrained pride demanding she be just as stoic as he. "Of course I will. Goodbye, Pas."

"Goodbye," Pas murmured and hurried towards the gates. He was the Heir of House Melissan - and Head in all but name and age - and wanted to be safely home and in private before he allowed himself to cry. Now he thought he might know how his uncle Amaro had felt after his exile - like the world had just been shattered.
He didn't see Dami and Lillian wander out into the gardens, hand in hand, or his broken heart might have shattered completely and lead him to do something rash. The two children looked between Luminous and Pas' retreating back before hurrying to her.
"Lumi?" Dami looked up at his sister and asked quietly, "Did you and Pas have an argument?"
"It'll be all right," Lillian promised, looking concerned. "Pas never stays angry long. He'll come and say sorry soon, I bet, and it'll be all normal again." She reached out to give Luminous a hug. "Don't be sad. You can play with me and Dami if you want."

Luminous turned and lay a hand on top of Lillian's head gently. Her eyes were very sad, and she couldn't manage a smile for the children, but her eyes were dry at least. "No thank you," she told the girl softly. "I need to go back to what I was doing. You two play and remember to come back inside when dinner draws near."

The next week passed without a sign of Pas. Lillian visited Dami almost every day, but she was escorted by a servant rather then her brother. Once or twice a cat that might have been Pas' companion Hunter had been spotted in the gardens, near windows of rooms Luminous was in, but the cat was always gone before anyone could get a good look.
One evening though, Lillian and Dami knocked on the door to Luminous' room, with Lillian struggling a little not to drop the wrapped box she held while Dami gripped a folded note tightly in his hand. "Lumi!" he called as he thumped on the door. "Lumi! Lumi! Lumi!"
"Dami, she's not deaf," Lillian hissed at her friend.

Luminous opened the door, looking at the pair in surprise as she reached to take the box quickly from the little girl. Shifting it into her arms, she also held out a hand for the note. "What's this now?"
