When Etaf teleported to the volcano, the darkness and evil there felt nearly palatable. The other Forces had finished making the journey and they stood near the lip of the volcano. Although it was very hot and stank of sulphur, it wasn’t as deadly as it would have been had they been standing around the lip while the volcano was under normal circumstances. Whether they or the abyssal portal were doing something to the temperature was unknown, but it did mean that Love’s chosen would be able to stand with the Forces safely if not comfortably.
The arrangement was simple. Etaf stood at the northern point. Soahc to the south. Efil to the northwest, Taed to the northeast. Worg to the southeast and Thuoth to the southwest. The Chosen were directed to their own places; Twilight and Dusk on Etaf’s immediate sides while Nalani and Snowflake to Soahc’s sides.
“We haven’t gathered power like this in a long time,” Thuoth remarked cheerfully. “It should be quite nostalgic.”
“I wouldn’t say nostalgic,” Efil remarked, looking down into the churning magma depths far below them. “I don’t recall this being a part of our ‘good old days.’”
“Well interesting at least.”
“We should get started,” Etaf said softly. “We’re all tired. All drained. All eager to get back to our homes so that we can rest and watch the world recover.”
Soahc spoke up, addressing Love’s chosen. “All you need to do is stand there, basically. The Abyss is basically where a good part of Evil exists. Love won’t be able to help but be stirred to action against her ancient foe.”
Thuoth nodded. “You see, the energies to create this portal are immense. To close it will create something of a ‘backlash’ effect. All of our energy is going to be expended just closing it so we’d have no way to shield against this. With no safeguards, fel energies would cover the earth like, well, a cloud. It wouldn’t be permanent but it would mean a considerable amount of suffering for all of Naurorod and many of the lands around it. But you four are to act like shielding guardians against it. Love will work through you to shield against the darkness. All you need to do is… Well… Be one with Love I suppose.”
“Think of those you love and care for,” Etaf suggested. Coax her to rise up in your heart. “Since you were Chosen… I doubt that will be hard.”
“Let’s begin,” Worg suggested.
And the Forces tapped into themselves, to their divine power, and began to channel it. At first, it just started as a nimbus of energy and power around each of the Chosens but as the Forces called upon more and more of that divinity, the host bodies began to change slightly under the strain of it. Vines snaked up and around Worg’s body. Thuoth lifted into the air slightly as script flowed like ink over her body. Taed’s body began to grow pale and shriveled, as if he were sucking all of the life out of it. Efil’s body grew luminous and radiant even as blood began to pour in rivulets over his skin. Soahc’s body began to twist and blur, becoming difficult to even look at without a faint sense of vertigo and nausea. And Etaf seemed to fade away, as if the person were leaving and only a cut out through space and time existed in silhouette, revealing a backdrop of stars, nebulas, and suns.
Love, Chosen, Etaf reminded them in an echoing voice.
