Name: Grace Locke
Gender: Female
Age: 34
Birth Date: Septi 12th, y. 984 (Fall)
Elemental Sign: Wind
Sign Location: Inside left forearm
Occupation: Wanderer
Favored Force: Etaf
Physical Description: Grace is a tall, long-legged young woman of average build. Her eyes are hazel, and her thick brown hair is usually pulled back from her face into a ponytail. She hardly ever wears skirts or dresses, preferring the ease of movement men's clothing gives.
The knees of her pants are usually somewhat dirty, and some of her older pairs have been patched, not from long use and wear, but because she's constantly tripping over SOMETHING. When she's going to be walking a long way, such as for traveling, she wears a pair of gloves with a bit of cotton padding the palms to help prevent bruises and scrapes on her hands when she inevitably trips and falls on the road. (Her hands seem to be the only part of her that work right, and she'd really like to keep it that way.)
She has very good manual dexterity, and her hands seem to be in constant motion. She gestures when she talks, and is always doing something with at least one hand when at rest.
Personality: Grace is easy-going with a good sense of humour. She learned early on that it's a lot easier to just laugh at your own mistakes than to get worked up over them. She
doesn't get embarrassed easily over physical mishaps (after 16 years of falling over her own two feet, she's used to it), though she hates saying the wrong thing. She enjoys learning new things and meeting new people, though she gets bored easily and doesn't stick with one thing for long (she's better about sticking with people, though). She's what people would call "a jack-of-all trades, but a master of none," though SHE prefers to say "a jack-of-all trades, and a master of fun!"
Background: Grace is the second oldest of four children. Grace's mother was a midwife, and her father was a locksmith. Grace and Sarah, her older sister, were fairly close, being only 3 years apart in age, and they would sometimes find places to climb where they could look out over the land and speculate what it might be like outside of Talen'sul. The climbing part didn't last long; soon after they started, Grace lost her balance and fell, breaking her arm. After that, it didn't really matter that their parents forbid them from climbing onto the roof and such places; Grace ended up with a fear of heights (or more to the point, falling from them) that remains with her to this day. It didn't stop them from wondering what the lands and people of the other elements might be like, though.
Grace had no real interest in her mother's profession; she loved playing with other children and helping to watch and entertain the younger ones with tricks such as juggling and pulling coins from their ears, but the mechanics of pregnancy and childbirth held no appeal for her. Instead, she would watch her father work. The different mechanisms of locks fascinated her, and to keep her busy and out of trouble, her father would sometimes give her a lock and a lockpick to figure out. Her nimble fingers could make quick work of the simple locks, but the more complex ones would keep her busy for a while.
Over the years, she found other uses for her dexterous fingers: sneaking candy, playing little tricks like taking one of her father's tools and slipping it into his pocket when he started looking around for it, and there was the one time with that horribly RUDE customer who didn't want to pay her father what he owed.... It was his fault for not closing his purse all the way, really. The coins could have just fallen out anyway, she just helped it along.
Well, okay, it wasn't just the ONE time. It was just the first in a long series of "games." If the customers were nice, she left them alone. If not, she'd see how many coins she could lift from their purses before they left. The only time she came close to being caught, she'd tripped and grabbed onto the man's coin purse as she went down. Luckily, everyone knew how accident-prone she was in that respect, and the man was none the wiser. He still called her some rather unpleasant names, though.
When Grace was 9, her mother became pregnant again. This was somewhat of a surprise, since she was by then 38 years old. Grace's twin bothers were born the following year. The boys were healthy, but the labor was very hard on their mother. She never did completely regain her strength afterward, so Grace and Sarah had to help take care of their little brothers. Their mother passed away a few years later, when Grace was 14.
Sarah married a merchant two years later, and her letters about all the different things she saw and people she met inflamed Grace's wanderlust. Her father, though he knew he would miss his youngest daughter, could hardly force her to stay with him and her brothers when he knew how badly she wanted to see the world. So when Sarah and her husband returned to Talen'sul for a visit, soon after Grace's 17th birthday, he gave her his blessing to leave with them and go wherever the wind would take her.
She and her sister parted ways near the nation of Ilyamen, Grace going on to the city, and Sarah and Alec returning to their home in Humontis. Grace is currently still wandering Naruta.
