Name: Kai Ginder
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Elemental Signs (and where they're located): Single Wind, abdomen
Home Nation: Born in Talen'sul, but currently wandering
Description: Kai is tall, at just over six feet high. His skin is tanned from years of warm weather and no shirts, and his muscles are the sort that come from travel and physical work, rather than training to gain definition and strength. His hair is a dark brown that seems almost black, and he wears it long past his shoulders. It could be lovely to look at, but he rarely bothers to brush out the wind tangles or remove stray bits of twig and leaf. His eyes are brown and often half lidded, giving him a relaxed and serene expression. His wings are average size and span, with the same colour feathers as his hair. Though he flies by using the wind, rather than his wings, since the accident. He tends to always have a goofy smile on his face, even if the situation doesn't seem appropriate.
History: Kai had a boring sort of childhood in the poorer districts of Talen'sul. His father ran a seedy tavern, where the booze was mostly watered down and the food was questionable, and his mother helped out whenever she wasn't busy with the children. And there were a LOT of children. Kai is one of ten siblings, the youngest, and as such he had a pretty charmed life. As the baby of the family, he was doted on by his brothers and sisters, and was never expected to inherit the tavern (not that it was an exciting inheritance to gain). He didn't have an education, though that was the norm for a lot of the children in his neighbourhood, learning what he needed to do in a haphazard way from his parents and older siblings. Much as the rest of the lower class of the city, he learned patience and a sense of ease at getting along with people from being pushed into tight living quarters with a lot of others.
And, just like so many young Sulans before him, he got a bad case of the wanderlust when he hit his 18th year. His family didn't think to stop him, he was much loved in his family but they had enough hands to run the tavern and they were sure he would be back within a year or two. So he set off from his, mostly, charmed life and started to enjoy the open road. The next year was fairly uneventful; full of ups - like accidentally conning himself into a high class party, and downs - like having to go nearly a week without food when he lost everything but his trousers and boots in a game of chance. He learned to play various instruments and sing, though his voice was never more than passable, and tended to earn his way along the road with entertaining the locals in whichever village or city he passed through.
After a year of travelling, he was missing the company of being around a bustle of people and, for want of companionship, fell in with a group of travelling Storm players. Unfortunately, they were involved in an incident involving slavers in Ekaitz in early 1017. Kai had been supposed to be on lookout as the camped on the outskirts of the more dangerous part of the city, but he had dozed off instead and what happened... Well, they had been set upon and Kai was among the first wounded. In pain, and frightened, he had fled without any thought for the others and never found out if they had been killed or taken into slavery because of his lapse in concentration. He feels as though if he had stayed and fought, the remaining members of the players may not have been taken into slavery. His right wing had been wounded in the fight and never quite healed properly, meaning flight is now only possible using his Wind element. Ashamed at how he had behaved and the now useless wing, which he saw as a mark of how he had left the others, he was (once again) too cowardly to return home. So for the last three years he has continued his travels as a solo wandering bard. He doesn't feel anyone else should share in his bitterness, so he makes sure to always have a smile, a flirt, or a kind word for anyone that passes by. He can be quite over the top with it, to the point where most people might think he's a moron, but he'd rather be thought of as a harmless moron, than for people to know he was really a coward. He'll befriend anyone, talk to them for hours about anything from the weather to their deepest fears, but he'll usually deflect the conversation from himself.

He should have stood up in front of the world, wearing the face of the coward he was, and let them see him for what he really was. He should tell his family what he had been responsible for. He should have gone back to Ekaitz and found out if any of the others had survived before it had been sacked. He should... But he didn't. He was a selfish and cowardly creature at heart, so instead of standing up to his sins and facing the consequences, he had buried it inside and pasted on a smile for the world to see.
They didn't deserve to feel the weight of his sins, didn't deserve to see the guilt that lurked beneath the blithe smile. So it was that this overdramatic bard had become who he was now, and after nearly three years it was a disguise comfortably worn.
He knew he should have been in the tavern hours earlier when he had been told that there was a curfew and the doors would be closed, but... he had accidentally (on purpose) wandered into a high class restaurant where they were having a special DESSERT TASTING NIGHT which had been impossible to resist. He had been born to be at this function, he was a natural... It had begun as a wonderful evening, he had been inhaling the delicious slabs of life-giving sugar goodness, when the diner next to him had got a little irate just because Kai had... accidentally... eaten their desserts as well.
They complained to the chef, and Kai was politely asked to leave. It had all got a bit hazy after the guards had caught him smuggling cake out of the hall in his pockets and demanded money for them. Honestly, couldn't they see he was an impoverished bard who's long days entertaining only paid him a pittance?
Grumbling to himself, sans cake and sans any remaining money he might have possessed, he trudged his way back to the tavern where he had to try sweet talking the door guard into letting him inside even though it was long past curfew.
After half an hour of arguments, cajoling, and pleading, he finally managed to make it inside. Grumbling to himself melodramatically about MEAN TAVERN OWNERS and VICIOUS GUARDS, he tramped his way up to the room. It was only once he was inside that the smile slipped away to something more neutral, and he sat on the bed to massage the ache out of his wing.
