And what will the cost be? an insidious little voice inside her whispered. Some of the joy fled her expression. She tried to push the thought away with some success. Whatever the price, they would worry about it when it came. For now they should try to enjoy the perks. "Do you want to stay here a little while or go exploring?"

It wasn't hard for Kaylin to agree. She smiled and nodded. "All right," she agreed, sliding off the bed. "But I'm going to crawl over every inch of this place. If we really can have anything we want..." She grinned widely, a look of pure, hopeful glee on her face. "Then I want a long, hot bath!"
"I'm not even sure I remember what a hot bath feels like," Nuo admitted. He hadn't had much opportunity for hot baths since before he'd even met Kaylin. That was a luxury he'd left behind after leaving home, though he did miss it every year when the weather turned too cool for bathing in a stream.

Kaylin smiled ruefully. "We'll have to remedy that then." She slid off her bed, walked out of her room, hesitated at the threshold of his, and then stepped in and up to his bed before sitting on the edge next to him. "Before I go, I want to say... Thank you." She smiled. "For a lot of things. Mostly for being here with me. It almost feels unreal to be somewhere else and doing something else." She giggled a little nervously. "To be, well, living."
A surge of affection flooded her and she began to fiddle with the edge of her tunic, picking at a loose thread and pulling at it so she didn't fling her arms around him. "I'd be a demon's thrall right now without you and I wouldn't get to live in this nice little angel-made home."
And I'd be.... Nuo squashed the thought and sat up.
"I only told you the truth," he told her, in reference to the demon's offer. "And--" He cut off his next words; they'd already be over the whys of his sticking with her. He knew she forgave him. It was sometimes hard to believe it, that they could have a real friendship now, but he was trying.
"Just...hold still for a moment." Nuo bit his lip and hesitated for a moment before leaning over and hugging Kaylin, quickly.

Kaylin gasped softly in surprise and her eyes flashed with heat, though the sudden moisture never formed to tears. The hug had been quick and unexpected; she'd tensed up without meaning to, much like how Nuo always did with her.
"I know how hard that must have been," she said softly, touching her fingertips to his cheek in quick, light gesture. She swallowed and whispered, "Thank you. It means a lot to me." She bent down and returned the gesture. "If I find anything interesting or tasty looking, I'll bring it back to you. And if I see an angel, you can bet two steaming baths await us... Followed by a large dinner!"
