Two figures walked side by side, only a foot apart. They where dressed in normal peasant clothes, each wearing a threadbare shirt and pants. While one of them was wearing shoes the other went barefoot, having lost her shoes when crossing a stream not to far off. They didn't know exactly where they where nor did they care, all they needed to know was that they where in Morilanta.

Avery cast a quick glance up at the night sky, her blue eyes wide as she took in the sky above her. For a moment she stopped walking, however a quick nudge from her brother made her walk again. With a quick shake of her blonde head the girl glanced around, taking in her surroundings. She was walking on a narrow road, a few small houses dotting ether side. She made a mental note that they where more like shacks, shacks that where probably abandoned. Why was she currently walking down this path? Simple, Avery and Thanatos where looking for elementals, looking for slaves.

Further down the road, the shacks showed more signs of both habitation and violence. Shards of broken pottery were strewn around some buildings, dents in the wooden walls giving a good indication of where the objects had been thrown. Blood had spattered and dried on some walls, leaving patterns of reddish-brown streaks and blotches. Not a single pane of glass was to be seen in the windows; glass was far too expensive for the escaped and freed slaves that made this area their home, and it wouldn't last long here besides. Weak light filtered through some of the gaps in the ramshackle homes from lit hearths or candles.

Somewhere deeper in, a woman screamed and the raucous laughter of men followed. In another direction, the sounds of a brawl could be heard. The smell of smoke and burnt meat hung heavy in the air, and when the wind shifted, the stench of midden blew through the slum.


A figure darted from one side of the road to the other, a bundle of something under its arm. A second figure followed, grabbing the first by the arm and yanking them back. The person gave a short cry and fell to the ground, after which the other scooped up what they had been carrying and wiped the blade of a knife off on the fallen one's cloak.

((Shorts aren't something that's in fashion as outerwear in this setting. The nearest thing we have, I believe, are short pants that some Winds wear to preserve their modesty if they fly while wearing a skirt or robe. For clothing in general, think more along the lines of medieval or ren faire garb.

That aside, it's currently fall, so short pants would be uncomfortably chilly, especially at night.))

Thanatos have a small shiver as they walked farther down to path, the surroundings beginning to creep him out. When a woman screamed and men laughed it was all he could do to keep from jumping out of fear. By his side Avery winced as she stepped on a piece of pottery that had flown out on to the path when broken, how she regretted loosing her shoes. As she paused to take the pottery shard out of the heel of her foot Thanatos noticed the figure running across the road with its pursuer. Avery appeared to have noticed it as well for once she rapidly yanked the shard out of her foot she snapped her head up, watching silently. When the second figure knocked the first to the ground she tossed the slightly blood-stained shard to the side and took off running after the second figure. Thanatos immediately took off after his sister, however when he reached the first figure he paused, this person could very well be a clear being abused by an elemental. With a frown the blonde boy asked, "are you okay?"

The thief, a short, dark-haired woman, ran off when she spotted the twins coming her way, seemingly unhindered by the uneven surface of the road. She looked back over her shoulder as she ran, her hands clenched in tight fists and lips moving silently. The road behind her grew even more uneven in her wake, with sharp stones jutting up from the surface and holes just large enough to catch a foot in.


Up close, it was clear that the fallen individual was a man. "Do I bloody look okay?" he spat at Thanatos, pressing a hand to his side. Blood seeped between his fingers, staining the yellowed wool shirt he wore.

Avery continued running, pumping her arms as she raced after the thief. She glanced down at the ground jump in time to notice the upcoming holes and carefully maneuvered around them, however she could not dodge the stones and winced as they cut in to her feet. In hopes that the thief was an elemental she switched on her clear aura, attempting to ensnare the thief.

Thanatos winced at the mans words and quickly took off his shirt and pressed the cloth against his wound. He didn't say anything in reply, talking wouldn't help at the moment.

If the thief felt Avery's aura, she gave no indication; it was possible that she was far enough ahead to be out of range. Unlike Avery, she didn't have any obstacles to dodge, and it let her widen the gap. She glanced back again and curled her lip when she saw the girl still after her.

Idiot girl, she thought. If I had time, I'd sink you in the ground for the slum rats to find later.

Her lips moved again, and she zoomed ahead with windborne speed, now moving far too swiftly for someone merely running to catch up to. In moments, she was out of sight.




The man narrowed his eyes and looked at Thanatos with open suspicion. Nobody gave aid freely, after all, but he was hardly in a position to question it at the moment. "We need to get off the street or the vultures 'round here will be on us both," he muttered, glancing around.

Avery narrowed her eyes as the thief got away and shrieked, "no one gets away, I will find you and you will be mine! You stupid, worthless bitch!" She didn't go to tend to her torn feet or return to her brother right away. Instead she waited for a moment, hoping the thief would dislike her words and return so she could destroy her.

Thanatos nodded and hefted the man up, allowing him to lean on him. With a slight stammer in his voice he asked, "w-will you be able to walk?" The scent of blood was beginning to get to him, making him queasy.

Whether the woman was unconcerned with the taunts of a random stranger or was simply out of earshot was unclear, but the end result was the same: she did not return.



"Aye, I can walk," the man muttered, pushing away from Thanatos to stand on his own, albeit a bit unsteadily. "And with that harpy screeching down the way, we might just go unnoticed."

Avery scowled, she hated little wimps that ran from her. With a sigh she limped back down the road, wincing as her torn feet touched ground. She would steal a pair of shoes as soon as she had the chance.

Thanatos frowned and muttered, "lets hope she doesn't bring to much attention to herself." With that he began to walk to the side of the road and announced, "we should get in to one of the abandoned huts and wait until morning to go get help, it should be safer to travel then."

The man let out a short bark of a laugh. "Those 'abandoned' huts are liable to have someone sleeping in them, and I don't care to get knifed more'n once tonight. This place may not look like much to you, 'specially in the dark, but the slave garden's got plenty of folks that've laid claim to these huts. You don't step into someone else's territory unless you're ready to kill them for it."

Avery let out a small yelp as one of her feet got stuck in a hole and tripped. The girl scowled and glared at the ground before attempting to climb back on to her feet.

Thanatos closed his eyes for a moment, attempting to calm himself in the dark of his eyelids. After the moment he opened his eyes and announced, "then we get out of this place tonight. We will rest once we are safe, then we will get you to someone that can help your condition. Come on, my sister will catch up." With that he continued walking, aiming to move in the direction the path went and behind the huts.

The man tensed and regarded Thanatos with renewed suspicion. What game was he playing at? He'd been expecting maybe that the boy might offer bandages or a small dram of healing water in return for some sort of favour (or coin), but not what he was suggesting. He decided that Thanatos was either playing stupid or actually was.

On the other hand, the boy didn't sound like one of his countrymen--the accent was all wrong--so it could just be simple Narutan ignorance. Of course, that could get a person killed just as quick as anything else. He pressed the shirt more firmly into his side and winced, following after Thanatos so that he could be heard.

"I've got my own claim around here, boy. You go prancing off deep into this land at night and looking like you are, you'll find yourself dead, in chains, or about to have your heart cut out on the altar by morning. You're giving aid, so I'll pay off the debt by letting you stay the rest of the night with me. Might even give you some advice; Evil knows you need it."

Thanatos blushed a deep scarlet. So it seemed the this place was not the kind of area he was used to. The boy quickly glanced down at his feet in humiliation before saying, "o-oh, sorry. Thank you, I guess I really don't know much about this place, huh?"

After what felt like a lifetime Avery saw her brother and some strange man come in to her line of sight. She quickly picked up speed until she reached them. Once she did she eyed the man with her brother with suspicious eyes. It just so happened that she wasn't quite as trusting as her brother.

"Obviously," the man replied, his tone dry. He gave Avery only a brief glance--not that it would have been easy to make out much in the near-dark anyway--and jerked his head toward one of the dilapidated shacks. "This way."

He headed toward the small building without looking back to see whether the pair was following. He'd offered; if they didn't want to accept, it was their funeral.

Avery and Thanatos fallowed the man, walking side by side. Thanatos kept giving frightened glances around the place as he walked, as if worried that something would jump out of the night and attack him. But then again it seemed like when in this place that was a real threat. Avery, on the other hand, walked with confidence. She was convinced that she could take anything that attacked her.

As the building came in to view Thanatos stuttered, "t-thank you for offering us shelter." He really was grateful, now that he looked around this place seemed deadly.
