"Everything," Schuldig stated. "It's another kind of mind game, and you know how much I love those. People have fantasies about so many different things. Some are pretty simple and straightforward, like wanting to be restrained or taken by a stranger. Those are easy to set up and play out. But more specific fantasies can take a little doing, like when someone wants a particular person. It's not enough to play the part," he stressed. "I want to be able to make them believe."
"Say you wanted Zira; and really, who could blame you if you did?" Schuldig grinned and started to pace around Mikasi a little as he talked. "Now, getting into your head to figure out what your perceptions and expectations of what he'd be like is easy. The trick is getting you so into the scene while I'm with you that you forget you're with me. I have to make you believe that my voice is higher and smoother, not as nasal. I have to make you think I have wings and that you can feel the feathers. That I look like him. I have to strike the right balance between when you expect and what's reality--too similar to your expectations, and it can underscore the fact that it's just a fantasy. Too different, and it might as well just be me."
Eril rubbed his chin for a moment as he thought. "Nearly twenty-five years now, I think. Milady Sabine granted him her patronage when he was about fourteen. Nathan brought him to her; it was a bit of a tradition that the once her current beneficiary was ready to join the guild, he would present a potential new bard. There are five of us altogether."
"When Zira finishes paying his addresses to Lord Crawford and Delilah, I suspect," Dusk said. "There's a good many people here now and it's been a little while since anyone new arrived. We'll be dancing before long."
"I think we could manage that," Zack said, returning from chatting with his friends. "Delilah, you look stunning as ever." He gave a courtly bow and kissed her hand before turning his smile on Crawford as well. "I hope you'll allow me to steal her away for a dance or two."
"That will be wholly up to Delilah," Crawford replied. If he got a say, he might end up keeping her all night.
"Then I hope she'll consent," Zack said with a wink at the queen before linking his arm with Zira's. "Excuse us; if I slow down to chat again, we will never get this ball underway."
The lords of Widor made their way to the center of the room, where they touched their signs and made a quick step forward and into the air. "Dear friends and honoured guests!" Zack called.
"My husband and I are pleased to welcome you all to our home for House Wintersong's first ball," Zira continued.
"Which will hopefully be the first of many and, in part, is to celebrate Zira's tenth year of being a citizen of New Anarlina!"
"We hope that you will all feel as welcome here as we have been."
"Maestro!"
With that, the bards began to play.
