"Thievery makes it sounds so...." Amann frowned as he worked his boots off. "I'm not sure what the word would be. Banal, maybe? I know when you get right down to it, it's theft, but it's an artistic one. Taking the time to convince someone that you're someone else, that the story you're making up is real, and in the end to give you what you want is a lot trickier and more involved than just picking a pocket or sneaking in somewhere and taking something."
He started massaging the back of his neck with one hand as he talked. With any luck, he'd be loose enough to be comfortable when they had to ride again. "I never really set out to make this my living. I started learning dancing when I was a kid. It was fun and I wasn't bad at it. I wasn't ever planning to join the guild here, though; I wanted to travel. See new places, meet new people. The 'cons' just kind of happened. Older brother liked to try to get the youngest--me--in trouble, and he'd do it in ways so that if I told the truth, which was usually 'I don't know,' they'd never believe me. So I had to get creative. It just kind of snowballed from there, turned into a game."
Amann stretched and pulled down hard on his shoulders. "It still kind of is. If I can't find a mark, I can just find a place to hire a performer for a night or two, but it's not quite the same. This winter was the first time I've ever worked steady as a dancer. I'll admit steady pay is nice, but it's nowhere near as exciting."
