Shadow sighed. "I don't particularly like the Melissans... But my father didn't particularly like some of the choices I made when I was your age either. You're certainly old enough to choose your friendships. If you'd like, I'll talk to your mother and have Flash talk to Lady Melissan. They're friends, so he might be able to get her to see reason."

Luminous smiled brightly and hugged her father. "Thank you!" she exclaimed quietly. "How soon until they can come over again do you think?"

"I've got some free time," Shadow replied, smiling fondly at his daughter. "I'll see if I can track down Flash and Lya and try to get the ball rolling right away." With a hint of mischief, he added, "But you have to promise me something, Lumi sweet."

"What is it?" Luminous asked curiously. Her mood was greatly lifted at the prospect of getting to legitimately and frequently see her best friends again. She could only hope they still wanted to see her.

Shadow smiled and stroked Luminous' hair gently. "I want you to promise you'll have fun with life, Lumi. You're still young and you've got years to grow into the wonderful queen I know you'll be in time. For now... Be smart about it, but don't hesitate to take some risks. Sneak out of the palace, have adventures with your friends, be a bit reckless."

He looked seriously at her. "Life is too short to spend worrying about politics, lessons or assassins. Duty will limit what you can do eventually, so enjoy your freedom while you have it."

Luminous looked a trifle unsure of that. Doing just those things are what landed everything into trouble, after all.

But she didn't want to live in timidness like her mother either. Perhaps she'd find a way to strike a balance between the two different worlds in her life. "I promise," she agreed with a smile and another hug for her father.

Shadow smiled and gave her a hug. "Good. I love you, sweetheart. Now go on, find somewhere else to be. I'm sure you won't want to be around if your mother and I get into an arguement over the Sanderson children."
