Acqua fingered her nearly empty coin purse unhappily. She'd kept herself and the children fed by picking pockets, but it was risky and there'd been one or two close calls.
It wasn't that her pick pocketing was particularly rusty, though she had gotten slightly out of practice, but she had too much on her mind to focus properly. All winter, she hadn't been able to keep from thinking about Vortai and that last job with Amaro. She'd been careless and it was more luck then anything that Amaro hadn't been burying both his little siblings.
Guilt chewed on her mind constantly. They wouldn't have even been on that job if she hadn't been so restless. And maybe if Amaro had been home... No, Acqua cut that line of thought off abruptly. Nothing could have saved Vortai...
~That's right,~ Pixie soothed. ~You're chasing your own tail, Kitten. You need to stop before you bite yourself.~
I know, Acqua replied, stroking the little cat riding on her shoulder. But I can't go home or to the guild, not yet. Not until I've put this aside enough that everything doesn't instantly remind me of what Vortai and I did, or should have done, or were going to do...
~I know, the wound is too raw to be home just yet,~ Pixie agreed. ~So we'd best find something to do that'll keep us fed.~
Acqua nodded and headed for the market place to ask around and see if anyone wanted to hire a guard for their shop or stall or if any tavern keeper wanted to hire on a mercenary to be a peacekeeper who'd break up fights and toss out the drunks.
Letha and Robin trailed behind their mother, looking around with interrest at everything. "Have you been here, Aries?" Letha asked her big brother.
