Lya's eyes grew wide as Tres described Shadow's symptoms to a T. "Th-that's exactly what's been going on," she whispered. How could she know that unless she's speaking the truth? She looked at Shadow again, still enraged. "How could you? Where is it?!"

Shadow's expression grew icy and he snarled, "It's been a long time since I was fourteen. Feel free to look around, you won't find anything. And you, Tres, get out and don't ever set foot in my house again. And you can tell Flash the same thing, since I've no doubt he sent you. Ungreatful, damn beggers, both of you."

Tres raised an eyebrow. "You realise the insults were childish even when we were children, Shade. You couldn't insult me into leaving then and you can't now."

[Kender Bard]

"She's not going anywhere," Lya snarled at Shadow, brushing past him roughly as she went to start rummaging around in hunt for the drugs. "And if you lay a hand on her again I'll claw your eyes out, you selfish bastard."

Shadow sneered. "You can't come close to matching me in power," he spat. "And I have better things to do then listen to you whine and Tres spew out old history." With a final glare, he stalked to the door, now Lya wasn't in the way, and stormed out of the room, slamming the door with enough force that this time the study window actually cracked.

Tres gritted her teeth. "Damn it. Lya, stop searching. He wouldn't leave if they were here." She tried the door and swore. "Bastard's locked us in. Do you have a key?"

"No," Lya answered, unruffled. "But I can still get us out of here." Going over to the window, she worked to get it open. Eyeing it, she sighed heavily. "It's a tight squeeze. I think I can make it, though, so you should be able to as well." She tried to calm herself down--no easy feat--to get her feathers to stop ruffling up with her anger and agitation. "Then I'll flit up to a higher level and let myself back in."

And then I'll get the children and get the hell out of here, she thought grimly. "I hope your husband or some other Mind is here to help you get back home."

"Thelon's here," Tres confirmed, taking a deep breath. "But I'm not going back to Sensatia or Naurorod just yet. Shadow needs help and I know I can get through to him." Her tone and voice was determined. "Then I'm going to find out when the hell he got his hands on the damn stuff and make sure they never even think of giving out anymore of it."

"Don't confront Shadow without Thelon," Lya told her seriously. "I fear for your life, Tres. And despite my bravado, I know that Shadow could kill me quite easily as he said. But Thelon is very powerful; I trust you to be safe to pursue your plan as long as you have him nearby. Now, after you." She gestured to the window.

"He wouldn't go that far," Tres murmured. "He loves you. But I'll be careful." She went to the window and grimaced. Forces, I'm getting too old for this sort of nonsense. With a sigh, she began to carefully climb out of the window. "Last time I did this, I was sixteen," she muttered.

[Kender Bard]

"You and me both," Lya told her with a brief, sad smile. "Don't worry. I'll make sure you don't fall too fast." She summoned a little bit of wind to cushion Tres. Once Tres was through the window and safely down, Lya began to climb out after. It was an extremely tight fit and she had to twist and turn a lot to get her wings through--they'd be bruised and terribly sore later--but she managed it and was soon down a well. "This is where we part, I think. Good luck, Tres. I fear you'll need it."

"Stay safe, Lya," Tres replied quietly. "I assume you're not planning on staying around here? Shade's probably gone straight to where ever he's keeping his stash to take another dose. You should have at least a sunmark to do whatever you need to."

Thelon, love? Where are you? she 'called' mentally.

[Kender Bard]

"Yes, I'm leaving," Lya told her. "I'm taking the children with me. A sunmark should be enough time to gather some of their clothes and food for the trip. If you want to reach me, I'll be heading straight for Neo'anar, and then Skyheort after that."

~In the market~, Thelon replied. He'd been keeping a mental ear out for his wife. ~Are you ready to go so soon?~

No, Tres thought. But it didn't go at all well. I was right in what I suspected is going on and I need time to think about what to do about it. Her mental 'voice' sounded tired, stressed and just a little pained. Her burnt hand was beginning to be hard to ignore.

"Very well," she told Lya. "Good luck then, and be careful on the road. The weather's likely to turn nasty soon enough. If you need to change your plans, you're welcome in both Sensatia and Fira."

[Kender Bard]

"Thank you, Tres," Lya murmured. She hesitated a moment and seized the other woman in a tight, sudden hug. "Thank you." Brushing at her eyes, Lya jumped up and gave a hard downstroke of her wings and was soon flitting off to the upper levels of the house.

Thelon teleported shortly after that. "I'm sorry things didn't work out, my love," he told her, offering his hand. "We'll go home and talk about it?"

Tres accepted Thelon's hand, giving him a small, tired smile. "Home sounds good," she agreed softly. "There's nothing I can do here right now."
