Nose upturned in a mockery of the nobility that she'd gotten so tired of in this area, Lya wheeled her horse about and hurried home, unable to contain the excitement at getting a break, despite the harsh sting Shadow's parting words had left in her. By the time she reached Damien again, however, she was smiling.
"Well he didn't take it gracefully, but he let me go," she informed him. "I will be ready whenever you are."

Damien has the girls ready to go, Ann carrying Luminous carefully and looking up at the adults in confusion. "I'm glad to hear it, Lya," Damien tells Lya with a smile. "Well let's get your things and we'll leave Shadow to get over his sulk, shall we?"
"What's going on?" Ann asks, unable to contain herself.

"I'm going to be going with you to Fira," Lya informed Ann with a smile. "I'm taking a little vacation from the Kingdom. The mean nobles have been giving my headaches, so I thought the desert winds could do me a world of good."
Glancing about, she located a servant and had her now-packed belongings brought to her. Someone had been quite wise in packing her things, and managed to make most of it lightweight, durable, and filled with the essentials. Hefting its weight experimentally, she nodded. "Right! Let's go then."

"all right," Damien agrees, already looking forward to getting home. "Ann are you all right carrying Luminous?"
"She weighs less then my pack," Ann replies with a slightly irritated look at her uncle. Taking the hint, Damien starts leading the way towards Naurorod, careful to set a pace that'll be easy for Lya. He'd made sure to collect a couple of extra water canisters as well, knowing that Lya won't be used to the heat the way he and Ann are. When they reach the boarder, Damien stops and looks back at Lya.
"Holding up all right, Lya?" he asks, concerned. "Let me know if you need a rest."

Lya nodded, but she was drooping in the heat, more than she anticipated. Her feathers made her twice as humid and hot, even though she was wearing something that was light and airy. They at least afforded her shade, and she suffered from no burns.
"It's quite hot," she panted softly. Most of her concern was for Luminous though. She'd been fussing intermittently over her baby girl, making sure Luminous was never in direct sunlight if she could help it, and being sure the princess kept getting water sips. "How do.. How do you get used to this?"

I haven't braided my hair since I was a little girl, Lya muses to herself, enjoying the coollness against her skin. "it's a good idea," she conceded, reaching back and fumbling to gather her now-unruly hair together. Though it's not a neat job, she manages to sweep her hair into a long, rough brade that reaches to her lower back. Feeling better already, she spreads her wings out as a shield against the sun, her wingspan enabling her to shade both Damien and Ann partially as well.

"Not much," Ann assures Lya, then looks at Damien. "Want me to run ahead and let Elder Tres know we're coming home?"
"That's a good idea, but give me Luminous first," Damien agrees. He takes the baby, holding her properly and with experienced ease, and Ann takes off towards Fira, although anyone not used to the desert would wonder how the girl knew where she was going. "Endless energy," Damien comments, watching Ann run off with a chuckle. "Come on Lya, not far now."

Damien shifts his hold on the baby slightly and replies, "There are plenty of children in Fira and eventually everyone over eight finds theirselves baby-sitting at some point." Wincing as Luminous catches his hair, Damien pauses to gently pry open the child's hand. "At least babies don't tend to disappear in the way older children do," Damien adds. After awhile of walking, he pauses. "Look ahead, Lya. You can see Fira in the distance now."

Lya stopped, shielding her eyes, and gazed. She grinned as she caught sight of the clan, though the image twisted and wavered in her vision in the summer heat rising off the sands. "Oh, it looks nice, Damien!" For some reason she'd never pictured this quaint, pseudo-permanent settling. But what had she expected? People crowded around a firepit?
She shook a head at her own ignorance. Moving closer to Damien she lay a hand gently on his arm. "I shouldn't have any problems here, shall I?" Her mind was immediately thinking of the Storms. Were the Fires equally misunderstanding?

"I highly, highly doubt it," Damien assures Lya. "For one thing, aside from a wariness of waters and clears, we don't judge people on their element. For another, Elder Tres has a Wind sister and niece, both of who are quite popular here. I think you and Luminous will enjoy your stay here." With that he leads her across the sands towards the clan, where Tres is waiting for them at the clan boundry, Flame asleep in a sling across her mother's chest.
"Welcome home, Honoured Leader, and welcome to Fira, Queen Lya," she greets them, then smiles warmly. "I shooed Ann off with Libre, Damien. So you and your guest can just settle in."
"That's probably the last time you'll hear your title, Lya," Damien comments. "We're not too big on titles here." Tres nods.
"Damien's right," she agrees. "At least among the adults at least. The children will probably follow Ann's lead, so they'll use whatever Ann calls you by."

"That's okay," Lya assures them. "I don't mind titles but nor do I cling to them. It might be soothing to just be called simply 'Lya' to be honest. It's been a long time since any strangers have done so. It'll be nice to see things here as well." Looking around, she inquired politely, "What does one do in their spare time here? I suspect that I will have a fair amount of it outside of my guest duties."

"Well, during the day there's no group activities, however you can always find someone by the water hole if you want to chat and a lot of the children and younger adults enjoy splashing around down there," Tres replies.
"In the evenings, those not on scout duty all tend to gather around the campfire for the evening meal and to share stories," Damien adds. "We find it a good way to teach the children our history and to keep each other aware of what's happening around us."
"It's a quiet life, but it's comfortable," Tres says with a grin. "Very different from Talen'sul or Maelstrom though. But I settled in quickly and I'm sure you will too, Lya."

Lya nodded, suddenly wondering if she should have packed some books to read. But books were heavy and would have weighted her down. No, she'd just have to make due.
"I could go for a swim myself," she mused, thinking of the water mentioned. "But I should probably change. I did have someone pack enough material to offer in trade for an outfit better suited to this clime. My tailors couldn't work on such short notice, and all my outfits are, well..."
She spread her arms helplessly. Her dress was short cut, for a royal dress, and almost scandalously thin... again for a royal dress. Which meant she was still baking away under the clothing. "I hope it won't be any trouble."
