It was amazing, Zack thought, just how much a little weather could make what should be a pleasant change into something downright unpleasant.
Sensatia was technically warmer than his mountain home this time of year, but Efil preserve, the rain! Once he got wet, the warmer weather didn't matter. It was still cold, and being wet just made it about a hundred times worse. It would be just his luck if he took ill from it without Zira around to fuss over him.
Actually, if I got sick, getting sick here might not be so bad. Sensatia had plenty of ways to get pampered, and Zira.... Zira was tired. Zack knew about Lord Fell's death, but Zira hadn't let him come home for more than a few days. He'd insisted he was coping, and, Zack had to admit, it seemed he was. He didn't feel the sharp kind of sadness from him that he sometimes caught when Zira spoke of Shyamal--the older Shyamal. But he knew Zira was taking care of his--their province, on top of helping Lady Jane with the matters of William's business and estate. It was a good thing Talen'sul nobles didn't oversee provinces as well.
Zack knew from the brief period of time when Zira was so worried about Shyamal that he'd had to cover some of Zira's work in Anarlina that he was unprepared for taking on the workload himself. Zira would have to doublecheck everything and probably rewrite a good deal, which would defy the point altogether. Sunny. Sunray knew all about running a province and he wasn't nearly as busy as he'd been as king. That was it; he'd dictate a letter and send it to Sunray via Mind courier.
That matter settled in his mind, Zack drew his wings in more tightly to his back and ducked under the waterfall cascading from the overhang of what appeared to be a middling tavern. Visitors to Sensatia were a varied bunch, which suited Zack fine, but he was an ambassador to Sensatia. And what better place to chat with locals than a tavern?
