"I'm a bookbinder," Garrick told him as he dipped a bit of bread into the broth to moisten it. "Not exactly a desired craft right now, even if I am journeyman rank."

[Kender Bard]

"Why don't you head to Sensatia?" Timble asked. "It's not that far and there's enough book lovers there that you might even be able to land a job."

He grinned slightly. "I'm from Sensatia. Sort of. It's where I call home now at any rate."

[Darastrix]

"I thought only Minds lived in Sensatia," Garrick commented around a bite of bread. "At any rate, I'm kind of stuck. Even if I were fit for travel, I don't really have the means."

[Kender Bard]

"Mostly Minds," Timble admitted absently. He considered Garrick's other problem. "Well, I've got family in Sensatia who've been bothering me to come visit. And I could use a small break from this hellhole. It'd be no skin off my back to escort you; you could stay in the temple."

Garrick paused mid-sip and looked at Timble with an almost desperate expression. He had to get out of Ilyamen; that day's earlier incident had proven as much. "You'd do that?"

[Kender Bard]

Timble studied Garrick and wondered why he was offering.

I suppose he reminds me a little of Divria. Helpless.

"Yeah," he agreed. "I would. Like I said, it's not like it's any trouble to me. I'm already going that way. This just gives me an excuse to go sooner. My baby brother's probably a year old by now or near it. I should go remind him what I look like."

Must be nice to have a family you want to go visit, Garrick thought. Even as bad as things were in Ilyamen, he cringed at the thought of going back to live under his mother's thumb.

"Thanks." He took a swallow of broth and sighed. It wasn't much, but he was already starting to feel full. "That's decent of you. Er. Not that I'm saying you don't seem like a decent person anyway; it's just a lot of folks wouldn't offer."

[Kender Bard]

"Hell, normally I wouldn't either, truth be told," Timble laughed, perhaps a touch nastily. "But I don't know, I guess I still have a soft spot in me. I blame my twin. Hopefully I'll get to introduce you at some point."

He sighed. "Well the lady here said they're full up. I'll escort you around until we find a haven that'll have some beds to spare. You rest up overnight and then we'll head to Sensatia. Unless there's something you really need or want back at your house."

"Nothing I could carry with me," Garrick sighed. He hated the idea of leaving the chair Virgo had gotten made for him, but he couldn't very well cart it to Sensatia. Even if he could, he had no home there and no place to put it.

I hope she's all right.

[Kender Bard]

"Well, don't worry; there's a fair chance it'll still be there when you get back," Timble replied. "So tomorrow we'll set out. I'll see you to a place to spend the night before I go let my captain know where I'm going."

She probably wouldn't be happy he was abandoning his ongoing work for someone else to pick up the slack, but he didn't give too much of a shit about her troubles. She was making enough money that it wasn't like he was hurting the company.

Garrick thanked Timble again, though he felt he'd been doing nothing but thanking him, and finished off his meager dinner. "Maybe the temple will have room," he suggested, and stifled a yawn. Between the earlier excitement and actually having had a hot meal, he was starting to get sleepy.

[Kender Bard]

"Well can't have you nodding off here," Timble concluded and beckoned to Garrick to follow him. "Let's go while the going's good."

After a tense circuit towards the temple, Timble managed to get Garrick to safety there. Bidding farewell, he headed back home to the mercenary guild's building, just flying to save himself the hassle of watching for rats.

Next morning, just after the sun had cleared the horizon, Timble was back at the temple to see Garrick. He had a pack stuffed with some provision and a smaller knapsack he simply held.

After arriving at the temple the night before, Garrick hadn't been sure he could sleep with so many people around. Once he'd been shown to a cot and gotten settled, though, he'd fallen into a deep, exhausted sleep. He might have slept from midday clear through to dawn, but the priest who had welcomed them was so concerned by Garrick's appearance that he had woken him a bit after nightfall.

He'd had the young man wash and eat another small, light meal before letting him collapse back to sleep. While the priest had gone to take his own rest, he'd had one of his sister priestesses keep an eye on Garrick through the night. He'd witnessed deaths where the dying had just had help come a little too late; they'd been fed and gone to sleep, and Taed himself had woken them. There was nothing to be done to prevent it, but they could make sure he died cared for. When he rose early the next morning, he was glad to see that wasn't the case.

He left Garrick sleeping and went about his early morning duties until he spied Timble returning to the temple. "Ah, welcome back," he greeted, wiping his glasses with the sleeve of his dark grey robes. "Here to see about that poor young man you brought yesterday?"

Timble nodded, bowing his head respectfully. He liked priests, so long as they weren't Soahcian ones. They still made him wary. "Aye, I'm going to be taking him to Sensatia. He's got a rather specialized job of bookbinder; I figure if he's going to find work, it'll be there."

[Darastrix]

The priest smiled. "Good, good. Glad as we are to help, we're stretched a little thin here ourselves. Until he can find work, our brothers and sisters in Sensatia will be able to tend him much better. I dare say he'll need some time to just rest before he starts working again. Shall I fetch him for you?"
