Verity stirred awake early. It was dawning, but from the color of the sky, it was new dawn, when the sun just started peeking up over the horizon. She rubbed her eyes and slipped out of the low guest bed. A glance to the side showed that Shima had already woken and left the room, likely for breakfast.
Maybe I can still catch him before he goes to see... her... again, she thought and moved quickly to the communal temple kitchen. An inn to stay in for all three was nice for a night or two but rapidly proved too expensive. In the name of conserving money, they'd all gone to stay at the temple instead.
The day's ritual was always the same for Verity. She would wake to find an empty bed as Shima left to pay a visit to Alexandria. He would return as evening was beginning to fall and spend the dinner and night with her before they retired to their bed.
Verity spent that time doing everything in her power to remind Shima of her affections and to try and resume old activities that she had lost during her captivity--theological talks, speculation of the future, and the like. It felt odd and hollow to her, as though few things really mattered in the same way they once had, but she wanted desperately to reclaim that old life again and so she went through the motions and prayed to Etaf that the feeling would return in time.
As for Shima... She knew that their relationship, brief as it had been in the past, had been purely physical with the added pleasure of a budding friendship thrown into the mix. But now, now she felt something else. Deeper. More gripping. More desperate. Is this love? she often wondered. She wasn't entirely sure, for it was not an altogether pleasant sensation. But the thought of losing Shima made her stomach twist and her heart ache. Surely it must be, then.
And she was losing him. She could tell.
This morning will be different, Verity vowed to herself as she scanned the dining hall for him. Etaf let it be different.
