Zack's wingtips twitched with unease as he weaved his way through the familiar streets of the Talen'sul, where the larger homes of the lower ring--homes of craftsmen and merchants who weren't rich and who didn't live above their marketplace shops--were located. It was probably one of the safest places to wander, he reasoned. The poorer houses nearest the wall were too close together, but here, one could travel the narrow spaces between houses that would be too small for a roc to reach into.
Zira hadn't been happy with the idea of bringing Zack to Talen'sul, even if it was to call on his mother and friends. Mainly because of the rocs, but also partly because he wouldn't be with him. Zira took his responsibilities seriously (to be fair, so did Zack, else the very thought of having responsibilities wouldn't bother him half as much) and was loathe to leave the Veatherfall children in Widor so both of them could go. Those children had lost their mother to the rocs. How would they feel if their caretakers up and went to Talen'sul?
"They'll want to come so they can see their father," Zira had said. "But the danger isn't past. Even if I teleport us all place to place, if there's an attack and people start screaming outside...." He'd shaken his head and given a small shudder. "No. They need to stay where it's at least safe during the day and where they won't have to hear what it must have sounded like that day."
"And if we go and they can't, they'll figure that it's because it's still dangerous. They're here, away from home, away from friends and the family they know best. I don't want them to worry that they might need to be put somewhere else because they think something might happen to us." Zira had given Zack an almost pleading look. "Like I'll have to worry about you."
That look had nearly killed him. But he had to see his family, his friends and fellow bards from his guild days, and his lady. Zira had wanted him to take someone along, a sword-arm, but Zack had refused. He could move faster than anyone he knew, possibly even Queen Lya. She'd been a triple Wind longer than he, but he practiced at speed. He knew Talen'sul's streets well enough to make a fast escape, but not if someone else was with him. Besides, if one was close enough to a roc to use a sword, one's proverbial goose was already cooked.
He made it out of the residential alleyways and into the market district, glancing toward the tops of the larger buildings as he picked up his pace. Anarlina's yowler problem was bad enough; he couldn't imagine having to go about daily business looking over your shoulder the entire time you were outside.
So far, so good, Zack thought. I'll be at the guild in no time.
