The night was like any other at The Cracked Mug. The thieves, retired and active, had worked subtly to drive off the ocassional outsider who'd wandered in throughout the night and now had the place to theirselves.
"Mama's coming home tonight isn't she, Daddy?"
"Yes Letha," Mat replied out of habit before realising which of the two children sitting at his feet had spoken.
"I'm Robin, not Letha, Daddy," his youngest son protested in highly offended tones.
"I'm Letha, silly Daddy!" Letha added, giggling.
"Yes, yes, I know," Mat replied, grimacing. The little twins were not going to forget that slip for awhile. "I'm sorry, Robin. I didn't mean to call you by your sister's name."
"Well, it seems I can't leave you alone for even a day, can I? Not only do you have my babies up well past their bedtime, you can't even tell them apart."
Almost as one the thieves in the inn glanced towards the door and grinned to see the second of their leaders standing there and greeted her in a friendly babble.
"Welcome home, Lady!"
"Aye, welcome Milady!"
"Good to have you back, Lady Kit."
"MAMA!" The little twins nearly managed to drown out the noise of everyone else in their joyful squeal as they sprinted across the room to each claim a leg to tackle and cling to.
"Ophf! Easy there, little ones," Acqua laughed, catching herself on the doorframe to keep from falling. "Really you two, I wasn't gone that long."
"Daddy doesn't tell bedtime stories as good as you, Mama," Robin replied, happily hugging his mother.
"Ah, I see. Is that why you two are up so late?" Acqua asked, smiling but raising an eyebrow at Mat.
"The older three are in bed," Mat protested, watching with a smile as his wife began the process of detangling herself from their youngest children. "And I got Letha and Robin dressed for bed-"
"So I see," Acqua muttered, eying the nightshirts the little twins had on under their coats.
"But it might have slipped that you were coming home tonight and they weren't able to get to sleep," Mat finished, stepping forward and kissing Acqua - to the amusement and teasing cheers and whistles of the rest of the theives. "I know it was only a couple of days, but we missed you, my love."
"Aye, that we did, milady," Tru, the elderly innkeeper, cut in. "Would my Lord and Lady care for a drink, then?"
Acqua hesitated, then shrugged. "Oh, all right. But just one, then we have to go put the little ones to bed," she replied, picking up Letha as Mat did the same with Robin.
Within moments the little family was happily seated at the best table in the inn, with the children seated on their parent's laps. As the twins sipped at cups of warm milk, Acqua filled Mat in on the trouble in Ilyamen and swapped guild gossip with her fellow thieves.
No one gave the open windows a thought. It was late, who would possibly be around to hear anything they shouldn't or even think twice about anything they did hear? It wasn't as though anyone was screaming "We're all thieves" and references to 'the guild' were more likely to be connected to the bardic or mercenary guild then their own.
