Neither Ann or Aideen tried to reply to Thelon. Shock and horror crossed their expressions for a second before Ann quickly gained control of her emotions and turned to her best friend. "Alyssa really should be in bed by now... Aideen, would you mind?"
"N-no, of course not," Aideen murmured, all too greatful for an excuse to flee somewhere private where she could break down and cry, or reach out to her father. She wasn't sure which she wanted to do. Maybe both. "Goodnight everyone." She turned and calmly left with Alyssa.
Ann took a deep calming breath as she looked at the three children. For a moment she wanted to send them away, get some time to put her thoughts together... But that wouldn't be fair to Flame. "No, no Libre. It's all right. I'm always happy to have you around and you and Harmony might like to watch this."
She took another deep breath and forced her emotions to settle down. She couldn't risk being emotional now, not when working with fire in such a crowded place. That would be yet another disaster. "All right Flame, let's begin." Flame gleefully created her little fireball, her pride in that achivement bringing a true smile to Ann's face. "Good girl, that's very well done. Now, focus on the fire, Flame. Focus and feel what I'm doing."
In some ways the lessoning was as good for Ann as it was fun for Flame. The sheer focus and control it took to slowly, slowly shape Flame's fireball into a flower without taking control of the fire from the little girl meant that Ann simply had no mental energy to spare being angry, hurt or upset. It was if the negitivity and pain that had been festering in Ann's mind was burned away in the tiny flaming rose that now sat in Flame's hand. "Did you feel that, Flame?" she asked the little girl.
Flame nodded slowly. "I think so..."
"Good, then try and undo it without banishing the fireball."
Flame stared at the fire-rose, her expression a picture of focus and concentration. Slowly the fire-rose lost it's shape and seemed to almost melt back into a simple ball of flame. "I did it!"
"Yes you did," Ann replied with a grin. "Well done, Flame. Now try and make the rose again and then we'll stop there. You'll wear yourself out."
Flame pulled a face at that... and her fireball instantly flickered out. "What?"
"You lost focus, Flame," Ann reminded the girl with a grin. "Be glad it just flickered out rather then burning something. Summon it again and make the rose." While Flame attempted to do that, Ann looked at Libre and remarked quietly, "Libre, I want you to remember that too. Flame isn't to practice this without myself, your mother or your sister nearby in case she loses control and she knows that. But, if you ever see her practicing alone, do. Not. Startle. Her. Go as quickly as you can to get your mother or sister or any other fire you can find, but whatever you do, do not distract your sister until there's an adult fire to take control. Understand?"
Yes, in a minute, Tres murmured. That sounds lovely, but I want to watch for a moment. She'd seen the torches near Ann start to flicker wildly after Thelon had spoken to her and she didn't want to walk away just yet. Then Ann had started the lesson with Flame and the torches settled right back to normal. Tres sighed softly in relief... until she noticed the torch closest to them was also flickering. "Gems?" she murmured softly.
"I know," Gemma muttered through gritted teeth. "If you'll excuse me..." She turned and walked out, deciding to seek out her cousin and see if Aideen would allow her to meet Naurorod's new heir. It would be difficult to remain angry around a baby and Aideen had looked like she needed a shoulder to cry on.
Tres sighed slightly. "I could use some fresh air, love," she murmured to Thelon. "I'll tell the children where we'll be while you see about that bottle of wine." Gemma will calm down soon, Thelon, she thought. And when we've all had a chance to calm down, we will talk with Ann and see if we can't at least start patching things up. She looked at Thelon and added, And in the meantime, you can tell me what else is bothering you. And don't tell me nothing is, you only get this sensative when you're struggling with a problem and since we're working on my problem, there must be something else. So we'll go out, find somewhere quiet and private to drown our sorrows a little, then we'll talk.
