"Garrick!" Virgo called out sadly, but didn't chase after him. "I'm..."

She shut her eyes and sighed heavily. "I'm sorry," she said quietly to herself. "Damnit!"

Why had she done that?

Why'd he have to go and keep on being a nice guy even after I might as well have thrown stones at him? she thought mournfully.

She probably should have gone home but didn't have the heart. She managed to feel hurt and angry as well as very much ashamed and knew of only one place where she could sort out that sort of tangled mess of emotions.

Tucking the knife back in its rightful place, Virgo sprinted straight for the Guild.

It was a quiet time at the guild at the moment, with a good deal of the Ilyamen guild having made their way to Maelstrom to look for the missing children. With the kids found, most would return home, but for now it was quiet.

Tuono was heading up out of the guild as Vi entered and he nodded a greeting, but didn't stop to talk. Roni however, a pickpocket a year older then Vi who'd joined the guild at the same time she had, flashed her a warm smile. "Hey Vi!" he called. "Want a drink?"

"Roni," Virgo murmured, glad to see the familiar face. Then she ran up and threw her arms around the young man, giving him a hug and whimpering onto his shoulder. "Roni I made a complete ass of myself. The last thing I need to do is get drunk so I can keep doing so."

And as if she couldn't keep things in a moment longer, she began to let the story pour out in a fast babble of words - mostly of how she had used an acquaintances' house to duck one of the mercenaries, felt bad and took him to dinner later, only to scorn him in hopes of gaining Rayke's favor... and the subsequent results of that.

"I don't know what to do," she finished plaintively.

Roni took a moment to figure out what Vi had said, then he patted her on the back comfortingly. "Yep, you screwed up there, Vi," he remarked bluntly. "If I was you, I'd go up to this man, admit you were an arse and appologise. Maybe bring him something nice to eat or drink as an appology gift as well."

"I might as well buy him a cook at this rate," Vi snorted. She knew she needed to apologize... but didn't really think she had the nerve to. "Can't I just write him a nice note instead? I don't know if he'll want to see me again."

But then again, he had stood up for her. She was terribly confused on that point. Did that mean he forgave her, or understood? More likely, she reasoned, he was just being a decent fellow.

"I think he's nice but I keep using him," she sighed. "He's going to think I'm insincere when I apologize."

Vi groaned and put her forehead momentarily on Roni's shoulder again. "Why do men gotta be so damn confusing? Uh, present company excluded of course."

"Vi dear, that is the question men have asked about women since the first humans were made," Roni laughed, then turned serious again. "You can write a letter of course. As far as I can see you still have working hands. But it's the coward's way out. I know if I was the man you'd done all this too, I'd be far more impressed by someone who looked me in the eye while appologising."

"I know," Vi sighed.

But I am a coward. There's a reason I prefer to fight from complete safety.

She agonized over it for a moment or two more until an idea dawned on her, a sort of compromise, and she clung to it desperately, feeling a little better already. "I think I will see him, then, tomorrow," Virgo decided, smiling slightly. "And then I'll go find Rayke and kick his teeth in and everything will be settled." She pecked her friend on the forehead. "Thank you, Roni. You're so wise sometimes." Her impish grin made it hard to tell if she was teasing or not though.

Roni laughed. "Everyone has to have one moment of wisdom," he replied. "Wait long enough and you'll get yours." He leaned back in his chair and added, "Want a hand knocking Mr. Prefect Arse's teeth out?"

"No," Virgo said, smiling slightly, but there was a hardness in her eyes. "No. This is... my sort of work."

After a pause, she seemed to relax and said more normally, "I'll join you for drinks another night. I need to get home; I'll be wanting to get up early to prepare for the meeting." With a fond farewell, Virgo bid Roni goodnight and hurried home, mindful of not bumping into prowling mercenaries. That would have been all she needed to make her night complete.
