Saph, having just come in from making increasingly creative snowmen with Teardrop and some of the local kids (who were currently building what they'd told him was a snow dragon), takes a moment to finish making a cup of tea before walking into the study. "What is it, dear?"

Laura sighed and held the petition out to him. "Read this idiocy."
The petition seemed to be nearly a love letter to Calders; the person who wrote it had gushed on and on about what wonderful rulers they were, able to keep peace in such a large land such as Talen'sul. Business thrived, people were happy, and the streets were safe, so on and so forth.
Then near the bottom came what was actually being petitioned. "I and several other people, as signed below, think that you would make excellent Leaders. We would like to see the Calders rule as the royal family. You have our full support and indeed we have begun rallying more supporters in order to help your cause."

Saph reads it, once, twice, then sinks into a nearby chair and begins to laugh. "Well dear," he says after a moment, wiping away tears and trying to keep a straight face. "If we over throw Shadow and Lya, do you think we could keep Flash in his current job? The thought of making my dear big brother run around after me is appealing." He snickers at the thought of being able to order his brother around.

Laura offers Saph a wan smile but she finds the situation a bit less humorous. "While this is clearly sheer stupidity to even entertain the thought, I think we need to speak with the individuals listed there before they cause more harm. A few people could rapidly turn into a mob and that's one headache we don't need."

Saph grimaces at the thought then nods. "You're right dear," he says, hugging her lightly. "And we will deal with it, of course. But do try and see the humourous side." He chuckles softly and gives his wife the trademark Calder grin of charm. "I'm sure there are days when Shadow and Lya would consider this petition was a fine idea."

This time Laura does give a more amused laugh. "Aye, you're right dear." She leans over and pecks Saph on the cheek lightly. "Did you want to go yourself or shall I accompany you? I have the man's residence listed on this form."

Saph smiles and replies, "I think it'll make a more effective point if we both go, Laura. Otherwise the next petition we get might state that I'm plotting to keep you from your rightful place as Queen or some nonsense like that."

Laura tittered at that. "Oh yes, because goodness knows you're out to get the power all to yourself aren't you? Poor Shadow, Lya, and I. We just can't see you coming." She tickled her fingertips against his neck lightly as she went to fetch her cloak. "Come now, I need to be able to keep a straight face when we meet this..." She looked at the form again. "This Jack Skrin."

"Yes, I suppose laughing in the man's face wouldn't be tactful," Saph agrees, fetching his own cloak. "When we're done with this, would you like to go see Teardrop and the other children's snowmen? When I left, they were planning to build a snow dragon in the town square." He smiles at that.

"I'd love it," Laura agreed. "We can call this the last chore of the day then."
Laura headed to the residence listed, which was in the poorer section of the town. Though the letter had praised the safety of Talen'sul's streets, Laura drew a bit closer to Saph regardless.
The home designated had a small plume of smoke rising from what passed for the chimney of the residence. Laura knocked and after a moment a tall, brawny, sweaty man opened the door. He blinked at the two, gaped, and then went into a deep bow. "O-oh you got my petition!" Despite his obvious poorness, the man spoke a bit better than most commoners.

"Yes, we did," Saph says gently. Unlike his wife, Saph is perfectly comfortable here. After all, he'd spent a fair amount of his youth sleeping on these streets after he and Flash had run away from home. "Might we come inside and talk about it with you?" he adds.

"Oh, of course," the man says hurriedly and opens the door for them wider as he scurries over to his meager hearth and puts another log on the fire. The place is very threadbare. Laura steps inside, grateful to be near the fire. "My lord and lady, I just want to thank you again for all your service to the people of Talen'sul."

"It's our pleasure," Saph says with a warm smile for the man. "However, about your petition..." Saph shakes his head and says, as tactfully as possible, "It's a flattering suggestion, but simply impossible."
