Zira made his way carefully to the approximate middle of the court, avoiding the more vicious courtiers as best he could. He did seem to be attracting more attention than usual, but as Zack was the one with three signs, he did have some breathing room.
Well, Zack thought as he brought his song to a close, here goes nothing.
Glancing over to the dais, he noted there seemed to be a slowing in the line of petitioners, which was good. Taking a deep breath, he made his way over, laying his violin aside once he reached the raised platform. He bowed to the Queen and regent, brushing his sign lightly.
"Your Majesty, may I have your permission to address the court?" he asked, his voice carrying just far enough that the nearest courtiers could hear.
Dusk, with some difficulty, managed to keep her smile from growing too wide as she nodded to their bard, holding up one hand to halt the line.
Zack turned forward to face the room, which was already quieting down as the nearest courtiers stared and whispered, word moving farther back that perhaps the bard meant to court their Queen after all.
"I have an important announcement, one that I fear has been delayed for far too long," Zack stated, his voice now filling the hall.
Zira started and stared toward the dais with the rest of the court. Was Zack going to flat-out tell them about his Force blessing?
Zack moved forward through the crowd, which parted to let him through until he stopped before Zira, who appeared just as confused as the courtiers around him.
"I'm sorry Zira," he said softly, prompting another round of whispers. Was the bard leaving the nobleman to hunt richer game?
"Zack?"
Zack looked down and took Zira's hands, clasping them gently. "I'm sorry it took so long to realise where my heart truly lay. And I'm sorry it's taken me this long to work up the nerve to do this, that I've made you wait. Zira, I love you. If there's nothing else in the world I can be certain of, I'm certain of that. And that there's nobody else I would rather spend the rest of my life with."
He took a step back and slowly sank to one knee as he pulled out a silver ring and held it out to Zira. "Zira, Dove, will you marry me?"
Pleasesayyes, pleasesayyes...
Zira felt his eyes pricking with sudden tears and found he could barely speak past the lump in his throat. Was this really happening? When he noted Zack's hand and wings trembling faintly, he decided it was real. Still beyond speech, Zira did the next thing that came to mind--he pulled Zack up by the wrist and wrapped his arms tightly around the bard, kissing him fiercely.
