The fleeing individual glanced back and saw Anna gaining on him. In panic, paused long enough to turn and throw the spear at Anna as hard as he could before taking off running again, still in possession of the shield.

The spear did something quite extraordinary; as Anna dodged it there was a sudden sharp cracking noise - far too loud for the thin shaft of the spear. A quick glance behind would reveal that the spear had gone through the thick trunk of the tree it hit. It quivered faintly where the head had buried into the ground.

There was no way that the other individual could outrun her now. Turning, panting hard, he decided to try and stand his ground. Touching his sign he outstretched one hand and squirted water towards Anna's face, hoping to temporarily blind her and send her crashing.

The man moved as much behind the shield as it would allow. "None of your fucking business, you nosy bitch," he hissed and then touched another sign, mumbling until a sharp shard of ice formed in his hand.
She grimaced and stood her ground. She could, of course, dodge the ice when he threw it....or she could make an attack right now.
Not certain of what to do at that particular moment, she moved into her most familiar defensive stance. Legs a little further apart, body slightly crouched, she lifted her sword to be at an angle, tilting downwards, and waited.

The man, too, stood defensively until he realized she was doing the same. Smirking he began to back away slowly, retreating rather than attacking. If she didn't want him to escape, she'd have to make the first move.
She cursed softly again and, realizing that he would get away, she had to attack. Knowing full well that she was likely to get hit, she lunged, using her natural speed to feint to the right and then move left, sword making a pale arch heading for his side.

The man staggered some more and then fell to one knee, glaring venomously at Anna. "Too late.. my comrade... fetch the.. art.. arti.."
His eyes rolled back up in his head and collapsed. Blood pooled rapidly around his fatal wound.
The shield, dropped from his hand as he fell, rolled towards Anna and lay on the ground. It was perfectly crafted, right down to the flourshing tree emblem in the center and the etchings of vine along the edges.
Anna grimaced and was about to back away from the dying man when she noted the shield. Walking over to him, she picked it up. "I better take this with me...and the spear, too..." sighing, she turned her back and started walking away.
"Oooh..." with a frustrated sigh, she stopped and went back once more, ripping a piece of her tunic off. Stripping the young man of his shirt, she wrapped the wound. "Might keep you from dying, but you wont be moving for a long time yet."
Finally, she followed her steps back to where the spear had been thrown into the tree.

It was now gone.
There was nothing more to signify where exactly it had gone except for this; footprints, faintly, in the ground around where the spear had been. They were of human size and shape, but there was no track leading to them except for a small distance away, and the footprints went only in one direction. Whoever had appeared, had shown up very near to this spot without making a footprint, had walked over to the spear, supposedly picked it up, and then simply disappeared.
