Brooke could still hardly believe this. Lady Calder had told them that Talen'sul was overcrowded and they would pay citizens to relocate to Maelstrom. That, the young woman agreed with. It was crowded in Talen'sul. What she couldn't believe was that her father had practically kicked her out and told her to come to the Storm city.
Well...okay, even that was believable. Her running around had finally gotten her in trouble with him. He'd wanted to marry her off and have her husband run the business when he retired. She didn't want that, but she hadn't wanted to give up her comfortable lifestyle, either. Not when she didn't have anything to fall back on. Brooke had hoped that maybe one of the men she met would want to rescue her, take her away and live happily ever after. So much for faerie tales. She'd damaged her reputation with the families that knew HER family, and nobody her father wanted as a son-in-law would have her.
What she couldn't believe was that her bastard of a father had not only sent her away, he'd taken the money she'd been given to move and resettle with. She had a little of her own, but it wasn't going to be enough to live on for any substantial amount of time. She needed a job, desperately. But what could she do?
Brooke looked around the wealthy merchant district hopefully. This was the setting she had been born into. Maybe someone would hire her here. She at least looked the part, and she would until she was forced to sell her dresses and buy something lower-class. If she couldn't work here, she'd try the royal mansion. At least the servants got to live in the mansion. Or she thought they did, anyway. Sighing, she entered the first establishment that presented itself, not really paying much attention to what kind of shop it was.
