It had started out as one of those nice, lazy summer days. Dart had closed shop for the morning to teleport out to the bank of the Great River with Raymond, his younger brother. They had fished (badly), sung (even more badly--though Dart had a fair voice, Ray couldn't carry a tune in a bucket), and just enjoyed getting to relax together.
Dart's job and duties kept him fairly busy, even with Ray and Korbin helping out at his shop on occasion, and he just didn't get to spend as much time with his siblings as he'd sometimes like. Even though he knew it couldn't be helped between his shop, Sensatia, and his lover and daughter, Dart did experience the occasional pang of regret. He regretted it even more at the moment.
He'd teleported back, right into a healer's home. The woman had been ready to scold him before taking in the terrified look on Dart's face and the limp body held in his arms. She'd had him lay his brother down and set to work quickly while her apprentice fetched a blanket for the soaked man to wrap himself in. Dart had watched numbly, hoping, even though he knew. He'd felt--
Well. Fuck empathy, anyway.
After that, he'd had to see his mother, Korbin, and Yukiko, and tell them what had happened. Explain that he'd gotten Ray...let him....
Korbin had silently moved to console their mother, who'd begun crying softly at the news. Yukiko, on the other hand.... She'd stood there, shaking, fists clenched at her sides, and unloaded a barrage of grief-fueled anger strong enough to make her oldest brother sway on his feet. Unlike Dart, she'd been born a dual Mind and made good use of her telepathic ability. The fact that Dart's own shields felt about as strong as paper didn't help matters much.
He'd wanted to leave right then, and had Yukiko been the only one there, he would have. But he'd stayed for hours with his family, trying to comfort them as best he could, minus his sister. She'd made it very clear that Dart could go drown himself in the river as well, as far as she was concerned.
Now, the next day, finally away from his family, Dart didn't want to go home. Instead, he wandered the streets of Sensatia aimlessly, barely speaking a word to those he met, which was unusual. Finally, he decided he was tired of walking, and getting hot to boot. He looked up and blinked at his surroundings, lips twisting wryly at the door he found himself looking at.
Mikasi's 'clinic.' Well, it would be quiet. He might ask for a mental massage, if the other Mind was up to it. Or maybe assistance in shoring up his shields. Dart knew his work was a bit more taxing these days, but he remembered the place as being rather soothing. If nothing else, hopefully he'd be allowed to sit and rest without having to feel the tumult of negative emotions bombarding his consciousness. Hell, he was probably projecting a bit himself. He couldn't really tell. Sighing, he rapped at Mikasi's door, hoping the other man was in.
