"Good afternoon Talen'sul! Oh, right, Caelium. Someone needs to inform the mapmakers where I shop that there has been a regional shift. Interesting, though - if two Leaders get married, the lands become one. Talk about a dowry!"
This was received with a few titters. Hachi grinned.
"Now what do you suppose happens if they get a divorce? Well, obviously the lands would split. Now bearing this in mind, you have to ask yourself... if we want world peace and union.. would there be a royal orgy first?"
A few folks guffawed, though those with children or delicate sensibilities huffed and stomped away. Hachi didn't care - as long as someone laughed.
"Ahhh I hope the King and Queen are not here, I would sorely miss my head if it were taken from me as a fine for my teasings... Who is in the region these days?"
A few individuals shouted back, "The Calders! House Calder!"
Hachi clapped his hands together. "Ohhh yes, that's right! I'd nearly forgotten about that. You see on the way here I passed an individual in the road. He was a merchant of sorts, making his way to Ilyamen to sell a few things. I says to him, 'Good fellow, where are you off to?' Says he, 'Why to Illyamen of course.' And this was all good and proper so I nodded and inquired as to where he came from. 'The fine Kingdom of Caelium - Talen'sul of course, that's the best bit.'"
The now gathered crowd clapped or whistled. Hachi winked.
"And so I ask him, 'Be a kind soul, sir, and inform me as to whom I should pay my respects to.' And he says, 'Well these days you would go to House Calder.' 'And where would I find the Calders?' And here the merchant rubbed his chins and got very thoughtful indeed. 'Well, you would look for the flags.'"
This brought about a murmur of confusion.
Hachi mimicked their expressions, looking quite bewildered indeed. "'Flags?' I asked. He nodded and said, 'Oh, aye, flags. Or an empty pole.' 'Whatever are there flags around the Calder residence for?' 'Why, to inform people whom they must speak to. If there's one flag up that is white, Lord Saph has gone missing and you should speak with Lady Laura, though she'll be in of no mind to talk to you. If there's one blue flag up, then Lord Flash has gone missing, and Lord Saph will be so distraught that he'll naught speak to anyone. If there are no flags up, then neither of the brothers can be found and again the Lady Laura will not see anyone.'"
The crowd was chuckling now.
Hachi grinned. "'And if both flags are there, sir?' And the merchant looked very solumn and said, 'Then you'd best not bother - the Lord and Lady Calder will be so tired from running around looking for one another that they won't see you.'"
The crowd roared with laughter.
