As the party begins to wind down, Shadow takes Tres aside - into another room and away from the hearing of the others. "For the first time in my life I pray that Damien and Kara can't see anything in the living world," Shadow states flatly after closing the door.
Tres starts and looks sharply at Shadow. "Meaning?"
"Meaning what in Soahc's name are you doing, Tres?" Shadow snaps. "When you swore you'd look after Ann, I doubt Damien thought you meant you'd drive her to an emotional breakdown. Wasn't Damien's suicide enough for you?"
"Damien didn't-" Tres began but Shadow cut her off harshly.
"Open your eyes and face reality, Tres!" he snarled. "It might have been slow, but he killed himself. Without Kara, you, I or even his own neice were worth living for. He may have regreted it later, but he knew what his stunt at Lacuna would cost him."
Tres glared darkly at Shadow, her eyes blazing. "What would you know about Damien? You abandoned all of us when you decided to be a stupid little boy and refuse to swallow your pride. Damien... lost his head for a moment and made a mistake."
Shadow bit his tounge, biting back the angry retort there. "You may be right," he lied through his teeth. "You knew Damien in ways I didn't. But that doesn't change the fact that we are going to lose Ann as well at this rate. And I will be damned if I let that happen."
"She's a headstrong, hot temptered girl," Tres replied. "With a tendancy to sulk that she must have gotten from her father, since she didn't get it from Kara or Damien." Tres shot Shadow a pointed look, recieving a scrowl in return.
"I wouldn't know," Shadow replied through clentched teeth. "I never met her father. And I'll thank you not to imply anything else."
"You let anyone else see you acting this way and the rumors will start up again," Tres counters. "So I suggest you back off or get used to it. Ann will be fine. Damien was moody at times anyway."
"Ann is not Damien!" Shadow snapped. "Or Kara! She is her own person and you are crushing her when you expect her to be her mother or uncle!" Shadow took another deep breath and took two steps back from Tres. "I didn't bring you here to fight with," he sighed.
"Could have fooled me," Tres shot back, folding her arms over her chest. "Don't lecture me on Ann, Shadow. She's not your problem."
Shadow frowned a little and said, "Listen to yourself, Tres. 'She's not my problem'? Since when was she anyone's 'problem'? When did she become a 'problem' rather then a person?" Tres looked striken as Shadow's words hit home. The king continued, "She's staying with me for awhile, Tres. You need to sort out whatever is wrong with YOU, and I need to sort out the issues Ann's having."
Tres frowned again. "She's Naurorod's Leader, Shade. You have no right to keep her locked up here," she snapped. "What if, Forces forbid, we might actually need her?"
"If an issue arises in Naurorod at the moment, I suspect it would be the assassination of the current Honoured Leader," Shadow replies coldly. "I have every damn right, Tres. She should have been Lumi's sister. She should have been my daughter!" Shadow shook his head. "I will do anything to keep her safe, Tres. Including lie through my teeth and claim her as mine if you push me."
Surprise took the heat out of Tres' anger. "You wouldn't."
"Oh I assure you, I would," Shadow replied. "If she hadn't been aged up before Damien had died, I would have adopted her come hell or high water. She might not be my daughter, Tres, but I love her like she was. Ann is staying here until she feels ready to return to Naurorod. We'll travel to Naurorod in a few days, when she's feeling stronger, so she can tie up any loose ends there."
Tres looked at Shadow for a long moment, then sighed. "Fine. On your and her fool heads be it. You're probably her last hope anyway. Tead knows, you can't make things worse!" Shaking her head, Tres left the room.
