Flash Calder, despite mild protests from his friends and family, has never been the sort of person to accept bodyguards, a fact well known in Maelstrom. In fact, on the rare occassion he is ordered to have guards with him, Flash generally loses them within half an hour.
So the sight of Flash being 'escorted' away from his study by six royal guards is a rare one. Even more rare is the sulky look on his face, an expression more suitible for a young child then a man in the service of the King.
"I don't believe this," he grumbles as one of the guards cough to cover a snicker. "I fall asleep at my desk once and the King orders me to my quarters... Under guard!"

"What's going on?"
Queen Salacia wandered out of the room she'd been in, attempting to paint to pass the time. She never did care for painting but she had to do something or she'd go stark raving mad. It'd been years since she had so much free time on her hands.

"Shadow's turning into a mother hen," Flash grumbles, crossing his arms over his chest and unwittingly adding to his 'sulky child' appearence.
"King Shadow decided Lord Flash was working too hard when the King discovered him asleep at his desk this morning, my lady," one of the amused guards explains. "We're under orders to escort Lord Flash to get some rest."

"Oh!" Salacia grinned maliciously. "Then by all means, my good men, take him away. I'll even go with you to ensure he stays in his quarters." She walked up and poked Flash in the chest. "You said you were going to take better care of yourself, you naughty adviser. Now you're to go to bed without paperwork."

Now all of the guards are struggling to mantain a straight face and Flash gives his sweetheart a look of mixed embrassment, irritation and pleading. "I wasn't asleep, Salacia. I was simply resting my eyes a minute and Shadow walked in at a bad time."
"Yes, while you were snoring," one of the guards just has to comment. Flash shoots him a glare.
"Remind me to remove a few figures from your pay, Rick."

"Flash," Salacia said in a warning growl of a longtime mother. She reached over and pat the guard, Rick, gently on the shoulder. "Nobody's going to dock your paycheck, dear, just help me haul Sir Denial into his bedroom."
Eyes sparkling, she added to Flash, "You don't want to spend any time with me?"

'Well what's a man meant to say to that?' Flash thinks, resigning himself to being confined to his quarters. "Of course I do dear, but wouldn't you rather go for a stroll or some such?" 'Say yes dear,' he thinks. 'Then we can have a lovely time together and by the time we come back, you'll have forgotten I'm meant to be resting and I'll be able to get some more work done.'
"I'd be happy too," Rick assures Salacia, clearly unconcerned by Flash's threat.

"Come on Sir Denial," Rick teases. "Come along to your cell peacefully and all will be well." Flash returns the jesting with a look that could shatter glass, but he allows himself to be marched to his rooms.
"Sir Denial?" he groans once he and Salaica are alone. "Dear, I love you but you do realise that I'm going to be stuck with that as a nickname forever, don't you?"

Salacia laughed and embraced Flash, arms wrapping around her beloved. "Good. I hope it sticks. Then maybe it will remind you that no matter how much you delude yourself, we all can see the truth of how hard you drive yourself." She caressed his cheek softly. "You do, too, Flash. I'm worried. You said you wouldn't work too hard."

Flash returns the hug and kisses Salaica's cheek. "I try not to, dearest, but there's just so much that has to be done and there's only so much extra work Shadow can really take on. He's used to T-Tuono and I taking care of the minior issues." Flash sighes. "There's just so much more work now. We're slowly getting Maelstrom back on its feet, but it's taking time and more complaints trickle in every day."
Flash closes his eyes and takes a seat on his bed. "I have to keep on track of things, Salaica. The moment I look like I can't handle things, Shadow is going to be able to wallpaper the mansion in the letters demanding he fire me." Flash shakes his head. "Even with most of the slavers gone with Mathew, no one's ever been happy about me having this job. Before, Tuono was my failsafe. People were content that there was a pureblood Storm to make sure the half breed didn't cause problems." Flash snorts, but there's no bitterness in his tone, just acceptance of fact. "Now people are just waiting for me to screw things up."

Salacia moves to sit next to him, guiding his head to rest on her shoulder so she could tussle his hair and try to get him to relax somewhat. "You both do need another helper," she said softly next to his ear. "Sunray and I have decided that Twilight has to take his rightful place. The people won't accept him as the King, it's understood, but he is going to actively be ruling as his brother's adviser. Openly. Otherwise, my sweet, I would offer his services and my own. Is there anyone you can think of that you would not mind having work as a partner with you?"

Flash closes his eyes as he rests his head on Salacia's shoulder, slowly relaxing. "I don't know dear," he sighes. "Saph, if I thought for a second he'd accept and if he didn't have responsiblities of his own." Flash looks wistful for a moment. "Forces, I miss him," he sighes, then returns to the subject, "In all honestly, Salacia, most of my friends are among the guards and the commoners, or in Ronduin or Talen'sul. I don't know anyone who could, really, take Tuono's place."

"You don't know any nobles you like?" Salacia asked. "Even minor nobles, barely above commoners, would probably work." She herself cannot vouch for anyone, having not taken the time to get to know the remaining people of Maelstrom yet.

Flash thinks, but then shakes his head. "I can't think of anyone," he admits. "Honestly Salacia, a good deal of Maelstrom's nobles wouldn't have spat on me if I was on fire, so I got used to letting Tuono deal with them while I dealt with the commoners and some of the relations outside Maelstrom, such as Ronduin, Ilyamen or Talen'sul."
