Flash can't keep from laughing in boyish excitement as Quest's smooth canter eats up the road to Talen'sul, the chill of the mountain air whiping his cheeks until they're red and his eyes bright with pleasure. Out here on his adored stallion, Flash can almost make himself forget all his worries about his family and the fact that Quest is fidgety and restless from months of being only walked around by stableboys only adds to Flash's enjoyment by testing his horsemanship skills.
Suddenly remembering he's not alone on this ride and the quiet gelding assigned to Salacia won't be able to match Quest's pace, Flash pulls the stallion to a stop and waits for Salacia to catch up with an appologetic smile.

Salacia looks a tad flushed, but she's smiling. "I've never been in mountains before," she professes to Flash. "This is a very exciting experience! The sights are beautiful, but it's colder than I expected."

"You're cold?" Flash asks. Mountain raised, the chill is barely noticable to him. After a second, he pulls off his jacket. "Here," he says, offering the clothing. "Borrow this. I wouldn't want you to take sick."

Salacia takes it, wrapping it around herself. Her trembling shivers begin to slow. "Thank you," she remarks finally. "In my younger days, this would have been very romantic. It still is, but the ache takes away from it. How much farther until we're there?"

"Not much," Flash replies with a smile, reaching over to take the reins of Salacia's horse and lead it, so all the Queen has to focus on is staying in the saddle and warming up. Sure enough, it isn't long before Flash is tying up the horses outside Saph's home. "Saph! You home?" he calls and in answer, Saph hurries outside to embrace his brother.
"Flash! I've missed you," he murmurs. Flash hugs his brother, then frowns as he steps back and takes a good look at Saph's pale, thin looking state and the shadows under the younger Calder's eyes.
"Soahc's curse," he breathes. "Saph, when did you last eat? Or sleep?" he demands. "Laura will have my head if you're in this state when we find her." Saph just shakes his head.
"I eat enough... and I have coffee," he replies. "I'm fine. Who's your friend?" Flash sighes, but quickly makes introductions before hurrying both Saph and Salacia inside. Not that it makes much difference. The house is nearly as cold as the wind outside, untidy and a blanket drapped over a chair hints that Saph has spent much of his time at his desk, pouring over reports for any word of Laura. Flash takes in the sights with visible concern, though he covers it with a joke.
"Saph, I know you like the cold, but this is going a touch far don't you think? Sit down, I'll get a fire going." Pushing Saph into one of the comfortable reading chairs, Flash gives Salaica an appologetic look before heading out to fetch wood from the wood pile. A few sparks later, there's a comforting fire warming the living room.

Salacia shivers and moves so close to the fire she almost sits in it. "I hope you don't mind but..." Touching her sign, she creates an aura of fire around herself - expertly held so that it hovers above anything flammable around her, but still manages to warm her considerably. She sighs pleasantly. "That's better. Saph was it? I'd gotten the gist of what happened. You have my deepest condolences. I'm sure a strong woman like your Laura will be found and brought back safely though."

Saph manages a small smile and Flash gives Salaica a greatful look before annoucing, "I'm going to make us all a warm drink, then we'll sort out what to do for dinner. You two stay here and talk all right?" With a warm smile to Salaica that makes Saph glance between the two and look thoughtful, Flash heads into the kitchen.
"I'm guessing you don't spend a lot of time in the mountains if you don't like the cold?" Saph asks innocently enough, but concealed under that is an urge to see what this woman is like. He can feel Flash's growing crush, sometimes Flash's emotions are very easy to seperate from his own, and that worries Saph a little. Flash is prone to hopeless crushes and heartbreak.

"We have no mountains in Anarlina," Salacia answered tactfully, bred and born to this type of subtle prodding. "Save for those that ring the Desert of Truth, and I've certainly never been in those; I have no wish to go to Morilanta. I hear there are mountains there, though, but as I stated, I won't be going there soon. The climate is typically mild, and I'm cloistered snugly in the palace during the winter months. So, I'm merely not used to the cold and mountains. I find them charming, actually, even if the cold does get to me."

Saph nods. "Ah, I see," he replies. "Well it's a good thing you're staying in Maelstorm, it's typically a bit warmer there." He gives the fire a quick prod with the poker then adds, "So, what do you think of Naruta so far?" "Or more accurately, what do you think of my brother?" Saph adds silently.

"Very pleasant," Salacia remarks evenly. "I wish I could go see all of it, and compare it to home. Although, I must admit, I've not been here long and I'm prone to romanticism, despite knowing no land can be ideal and perfect. Still, I'll be here for at least a year, if not more, and that'll give me plenty of time to adjust and learn."

Flash returns soon, with hot drinks and toasted sandwhiches for everyone. Glancing over the papers on Saph's desk, Flash frowns. "Saph, where is the general town paper work?" he asks. "Expenses, earnings, reports of damage, that sort of thing?" Saph looks blankly at his brother, then shrugs.
"Haven't seen anything like that..." he murmurs. "I don't know..." Flash frowns.
"No one's come to you with problems?" he presses, frowning. "At all?" Saph shakes his head and Flash's frown deepens. Years of political games tells him something is very wrong here. "Lady Salaica, would you mind keeping company with Saph while I slip out for awhile?"
Post by Kender Bard on Mar 30, 2007 1:07:39 GMT -5
"Certainly," Salacia remarks, snatching one of the drinks and blowing on it. "He's a sweet young man." Eyes glittering with mischief, she adds in Saph's direction, "In fact, if we were back home, my sons would be watching you like a hound."

"He's also taken," Flash replies as Saph chuckles, aware of the faint jealousy in his brother's tone and thoughts. Feeling a touch of reassurance from Saph, Flash swiftly goes off to change into some of Saph's older clothes so as not to scream noble and gloves to hide his storm sign then leaves, heading into town and looking for someone who might exchange a little gossip. Spotting an elderly woman, he wanders over casually.
"Excuse me miss," Flash begins casually, switching over to the rougher speech pattens of a merc. "You wouldn't know if any of the noble families would take on a new guardsman do you? I've been, well, more then a little down on me luck lately... Could really use some work, perhaps for a higher ranked family that'll let me build me repuation... Or could ya tell me where to find whoever's in charge so I can see if they know anyone?"

"Oh, poor thing," the woman clucks. "We've all been having hard times around here, but Lord Beesebury is an arms merchant and he's doing all he can to help the people. If you ask for a job, I bet he'd give it to you, right-like." She even gave him directions to the manor, without any prompting.

"Thank ya miss," Flash replies, giving a wave and heading off in the direction indicated. "So," he thinks. "People are treating this Beesebury as the leader, are they? Interresting... I wonder if I should visit the Guild, see what they know... No, I can handle this alone. Best to keep my contact with the guild to as little as possible." That settled, Flash heads to Beesebury's mansion, slipping over the wall with ease then looking for a back way in.
